Ecology, forestry, scientific illustration, and artistic expression came together for a memorable evening at the Lakes Region Art Gallery’s monthly Art Talk on June 15, 2026. The program featured artist, scientific illustrator, and communications specialist Raisa Kochmaruk, who shared her unique perspective on the intersection of science and art.

Several gallery members attended the engaging presentation. Many were surprised to learn about the important work being conducted at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and Research Foundation, located just north of the Lakes Region in Thornton, New Hampshire.

Raisa introduced the group to the forest’s long history of ecological research, noting that Hubbard Brook is where acid rain was first identified and studied. Ongoing research continues to monitor water quality, air chemistry, soils, and living organisms, while also supporting scientific conferences and educational programs.

The evening concluded with a hands-on artistic exercise as Raisa guided participants through drawing a loon, blending observation, science, and creativity.

In recent months, our Art Talk series has featured photographers, printmakers, and acrylic and oil painters. Looking ahead to July, gallery member and painter Don Geiger will discuss his creative process, sharing how he develops composition and direction before putting brush to canvas.

LRAA's monthly Art Talks (3rd Monday every month at 6:00) on June 15th featured Raisa Kochmaruk, Communications Specialist from the Hubbard Brook Research Fondation in the White Mountains. She is primarily a nature illustrated and began her talk by explaining the purpose of Hubbard Brook research, the measurements taken of the environment, and how they are used. She then provide the tools and paper needed to draw a Common Loon, including pictures of Loons and a sculpture to use as a model. A very interesting talk about the Hubbard Brook reasearch and a fun lesson in wildlife illustrating.

Like to showcase our two newest artist. Nancy Kingston, works in oils and enjoys NH and New England landmarks and subjects. Joyce Pracuta, watercolor artists who's subjects cover a wide range.

Shrug off this cold wet weather by visiting the Lakes Region Art Associations Gallery in the Tanger Outlets in Tilton. 3000 square feet of warm colorful spring and summer art, art prints and greeting cards. Come in this weekend; talk with the artist in residents and enjoy the eye candy, perhaps you'll find a colorful piece of art for that corner wall or cubby that nothing seems to fit in. We are open 10 to 8 today and 9 till 8 tomorrow. If you have a runner in the 5k, come see us while there making their way around the course. We would love to see you!
