More good times on Mendocino today, I wrapped up this 18 x 24 MacCallum House Inn & Restaurant then did an 11 x 14 speed painting of a Porsche 914 that parked within view, met the owners and had a nice chat.

I wrapped this one up this am. Yesterday the painting had a blue sky peeking through the clouds and I liked it, but intense winds blew a lot of debris into the paint surface, so I had to scrape and repaint today. I like the pale colored sky better anyway.

I began this one on an overcast day, then gradually evolved it into a sunny picture. The paint surface seemed trapped in a semi-wet state—my least favorite kind of painting experience, with that forever mucky, tacky feel. I tried to embrace it and ended up using a great deal of scumbling.
I’ve never used such bright reflected light before, and I was shocked to find that I could use a yellow in the reflected light that was almost as bright as the direct light on the wall itself.
This is without a doubt my favorite building in Mendocino—not just for the way it looks, but also for its history. It appeared in East of Eden with James Dean, in an early scene when he sees his mother come out of the bank.

This one started as a sunset painting, it was all about the buildings as a wall of purple shadow against the Indian yellow sky, but I wasn’t feeling it, so I switched to an overcast morning light. Worked in a beautiful dog and a figure at the last minute. My figures are typically Franken-figures, meaning I’ll combine this persons skin color with that persons gesture and another’s wardrobe, a necessary strategy because they move, of course. Thankful for another year, it’s my birthday today btw, 47 came around pretty quick but so far it’s coming up all me, got a fresh cut from Steven at Kreature Comforts and my wife cooked me an amazing lunch with all the melons were harvesting. Luffa with pork, bitter melon with tofu and pork and fermented peppers, fresh cantaloupe, egg and tomato, and lemon cucumbers. Now I’m sitting back and enjoying work by friends
