It was a beautiful day for a trout release at Stone Mountain State Park! Thankful for our partners at Trout Unlimited Blue Ridge Chapter for another great year. TU volunteers spoke on the importance of clean, cool streams and taught fly fishing techniques. Thanks to Duke Energy forestry experts for their talks on responsible management near streams. Last but not least, North Carolina State Parks and Recreation Rangers guided students on a stream invertebrate survey where we found lots of biodiversity!

We had a successful Career Day at Archdale Elementary, where our aquarists engaged with over 300 students, sharing insights about the ZAS program and our animals. Students were especially excited to meet Batman, our Pac-Man frog, and Robin, our axolotl.

The animal care industry has its highs and lows. We are deeply saddened to share the loss of Deeks, our beloved Central Bearded Dragon, who was a resilient presence in the Zoo and Aquarium Science Program for many years.

Already an adult when he arrived, Deeks was donated to the Davidson-Davie Community College Zoo and Aquarium Science Program in 2015. He spent 11 years as a vital part of our ZAS family. Deeks was cherished by faculty, staff and students. He was a part of the development of over 500 college and K-12 students and formed bonds and connections with countless people during his life here. Deeks was a wonderful education ambassador for his species and it was an honor to get to work with him everyday. Please share any photos or memories of Deeks!

Makaila completed her internship throughout the Fall semester and Anya is working on one for the Spring!

M: Blood Python, Manatees, Blue Whales

A: Green Anaconda, African Elephant, Dolphins

What animal do you enjoy working with the most here?

M: Brownie the guinea pig

A: All the reptiles!

M: Introduction to Aquarium Science

A: Herpetology

What is your dream job?

M: Working in a wildlife rehabilitation facility

A: Becoming a zoologist

What do you like most about the ZAS program?

M: Getting to work with different partner facilities.

A: It gives students great opportunities to have a career with animals.
