Day 17 - Quote Prompt 1: John Greene

“The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive." - from ‘Looking for Alaska’

The Exit Door

Within the labyrinth of a pained mind,
the only pathways you will find
twisting, twining, weave and wind,
leading you back into its core,
suggesting you should settle the score

the overgrowth that confines,
flows from the baggage you declined
to lose before it redefined
what you love and you adore,
what you hate, what you abhor

the roots of rage that intertwine,
connecting every crevice, crack, and corridor,
a monstrous maze that was designed
to keep your ship from reaching shore,
the trap that undermines the tour

it may take shears of a different kind
to sever those cords that serve to bind
the truth beneath its earthen floor,
the hidden key you’re searching for—
forgiveness is the exit door

Written in response to a Season of Love prompt posted on the West Tennessee Poets Society group page, taking my my inspiration straight from nature, again…

Love’s Seasons

Love’s inspired by the seasons,
each bearing its own resplendence:

Springtime sets the tone and mood
as love birds build their nesting broods,

The Summer with its warmer weather
brings together birds of same feather,

Autumn’s amber, golden hues
is for flock migration, tried and true,

and Winter renders wisened reason
for love to bloom with independence

Day 16 - Metered Poetry: Iambic Meter
(3rd submission)

Adenium Obesum

The fragrance of a desert rose
may seem exotically sweet,
like jasmine with green undertones,
a floral scented treat
that’s tempting to the nose,
delectable and savory,
but it would take a bit of bravery
to let its toxic nectar pass your lips—

Adenium Obesum isn’t worth a trip
down to the school infirmary,
and you’ll regret taking that sip!

Day 16 - Metered Poetry: Iambic Meter
(2nd submission)

Wanton Vagaries

Forgotten realms from long lost dreams
still plague my reveries like flagrant fantasies
of unrivaled measure,
thoughts that I once treasured,
the wanton vagaries of unbridled pleasure,
the echoes of my screams
tormenting me with memories,
a victim of your endless schemes.

Day 16 - Metered Poetry: Iambic Meter

Origami

Origami is like poetry
that’s written without words,
images from paper made
with patterns that unfurl,
softly inward curled
and folded into swirls
of a rhythmic nature
unable to be heard,
but hidden in each fold’s
a story to behold.

Day 15 - New Moon
(2nd submission)

The Crescent Moon

Upon the crescent moon I gazed
pondering her beauty
and in her sightless eyes I saw
a cause for reverie—

Her face was filled with crags
her body laced with scars
yet she was perfectly at ease
with her place among the stars
