Day 91 - Porcelain Heart

The Tender Dove

A heart that’s prone to breaking
for the sake of finding love
is ripened for the taking
by a soul that fleeces,
within the shadows creeping

Oftentimes mistaking
an iron cage’s rust
as a promise for safekeeping,
an exchange of bartered leases
worthy of its trust

A disaster in the making
for the tender dove
whose torment never ceases,
within the cage left weeping,
shattered into pieces
and crumbled porcelain dust

Day 90 - Thunder in the Air

Dragon Storm

A dragon rises from its lair
upon black leather wings,
from its nostrils’ twin flames blaze
as bursts of lightning flare
in a flash of streaking plumes,
thunder rupturing the air
to a siren’s blaring rings.

The townsfolk meet their doom
beneath a fearsome, fiery gaze,
as the landscape it lays bare
with each resounding boom,
amid explosive blooms
and a cloud of smoky haze
shelters rendered into tombs.

Day 88 - Photo Prompt 6: Driftwood
(2nd submission)

Author’s Note: This is written about what being abandoned by my family and friends at my time of greatest need felt like. Nine years have passed since then, and this is the first I’ve ever actually written about that time with any emotion other than anger or sadness. This simply captures what it felt like in that moment, and I am no longer in that place…

Dead Wood

I’m the tree that was torn from the earth by its roots
without any branches or leafy offshoots
the stump discarded by the forest as rotten
the sister my brother’s forgotten
the daughter that couldn’t bear children
the auntie that won’t be forgiven
tossed into the throes of the turbulent sea
the dead wood that bobbed in the waves aimlessly
until I was stranded upon a distant seashore
a piece of driftwood empty and hollowed out at its core.

Day 88 - Photo Prompt 6: Driftwood

Gypsy Soul

I’m drifting like a lost gypsy soul
wandering the world without a goal,
afloat upon the waves, within the current,
no reefs encountered as a deterrent
from me rising gently with the tide,
a clump of seaweed clinging to my side,
using the stars above me as my guide,
before the white sands of a beach
this nomadic traveler does breach,
the sea receding from my reach,
and I’m washed ashore among the shells
twinkling in the brine like silver bells.
