Bulgarian Water Gap, 2026
24” x 24”

This painting took 4 years to make because those damn MICE thought I put out a snack for them during the winter months.

They randomly took the seeds off the painting in no particular pattern leaving me with a half-finished work.

So I thought I will cover this with encaustic as I lay down the seeds, better protecting the piece as I put it together.
Which worked for awhile until the mice didn’t seem bothered by the wax layer and removed the seeds anew!

Now having not enough of these naturally incised watermelon seeds I had to start growing this watermelon again. But of course just as the melon was beginning to ripen some critters in the greenhouse ate all but one fruit so I didn’t have quite enough seeds to proceed.

Fast forward another growing season and I managed to grow lots of these smaller Bulgarian watermelons providing me with plenty of material to work with, or so I thought!

Having strategized that the work needed to be hung in between times of me working on it worked in terms of deterring the studio mice.
However I didn’t have quite as many seeds to finish this work.

Hence the gap.
Thanks for collaborating with me 🐁!

Available.

I love watching people’s expressions when viewing the work “Heaven & Hell” (when they learn it is made out of ), as exemplified here by the mayor of Poughkeepsie, Yvonne Flowers.

Grateful to meet and greet a lot of new folks and some familiar faces like the Executive Director Pamela Brown from Beatrix Farrand at Bellefield who came for yesterday’s events.

Today is the last day of this ART event and although I represent the “gallery” part of this there are soooo many artists sharing their skills for free! So come do some quilting, hand-building, bead-making, mural painting, printing making (and more!) at this free event.

The brainchild of a group of folks spearheaded by Suprina Sculpture the thepollinatorpk want to create a “Creative Hub”, in Poughkeepsie for adults.
So come check out this amazing event and learn more about what they’re trying to do and even better, get involved!!

Come see this intricate work in person in the new exhibition ‘Fertile Ground’ Carrie Haddad Gallery
9/4-10/18

Detail- “No Fly Zone”.

Collected last season by handpicking off the Bee Bee tree. Probably only a few hundred in this piece, out of the hundreds I gathered at the arboretum.

If you know this invasive leaf hopping insect you know how beautiful it is.
I tried to celebrate its beauty in this mandala type work.

Took forever to make. I literally had to pull off all the wings, separate them, sort them and design them in a way that was meaningful to me.
