✨ New Work in My Black Male Artist Professor Series — #20: David C. Driskell ✨

I’m honored to share the background layer of portrait #20 of 25 in my Black Male Artist Professor series, a 36” × 48” work of David C. Driskell has been completed. The background is complete using Casein, India ink, paper, cloth, and Gold Leaf on board, incorporating symbolic references and geometric abstraction. The color palette reflects the institutions where Driskell earned his degrees and the college where he taught later in life. This portrait will also references “Joy Cometh in the Morning,” reflecting hope, resilience, and Driskell’s thoughts on the celebration of the Black male artist in the art studio.

📌 About David C. Driskell
Driskell (1931–2020) was an American artist, scholar, curator, and educator, instrumental in establishing African American art as a formal field of study. He earned his BA from Howard University and MFA from The Catholic University of America, curated the groundbreaking 1976 exhibition “Two Centuries of Black American Art,” and later taught at the University of Maryland, College Park, where the David C. Driskell Center honors his legacy.

In the Art studio, working on the backgrounds for 14 watercolor portrait paintings—each honoring a colleague who contributed an essay to my upcoming book, Paintings of Inspirational Artists & Professors: The Black Male Artist Professor Series.

These portraits are both a gesture of gratitude and a visual tribute. I’m using brilliant metallic watercolors in the background of each 9” × 12” painting to symbolize my deep appreciation for their written contributions. Each finished portrait will appear alongside their essay in the book, celebrating their voices, scholarship, and creative impact.

THANK YOU 🙏🏿

Portrait No. 18: Stanley Whitney (Work-in-Progress, but almost completed)

I’m excited to continue working on my ongoing Black Male Artist Professor Portrait Series, now reaching Portrait No. 18 out of 25. This new work honors the renowned American artist Stanley Whitney, widely respected for his groundbreaking contributions to geometric abstraction, rhythm, and vibrant color compositions.

I have started adding more layers of paint to the figure for this 36” x 48” painting. I need to add some more tint and also finish painting his beard.

The portrait figure itself is Fauvist-inspired, emphasizing bold color, expressive brushwork, and emotional intensity, celebrating the energy and creativity Whitney brings to his work.

Who Is Stanley Whitney? .whitney

Stanley Whitney (b. 1946) is an internationally acclaimed contemporary painter known for his structured yet improvisational color-grid compositions influenced by African American cultural history, jazz improvisation, classical architecture, and global art traditions. Whitney attended the Kansas City Art Institute (1968) and Yale University / Yale School of Art (1972) for his studies. He is also Professor Emeritus, Painting at Temple University, where he shared his expertise in abstract painting with generations of students. His work challenges rhythm, repetition, and spatial perception, positioning him as one of the most influential abstract artists working today.

Thank you for following this journey and supporting this creative series celebrating Black artist representation, education, and artistic legacy.

This new work honors the renowned American artist Stanley Whitney, widely respected for his groundbreaking contributions to geometric abstraction, rhythm, and vibrant color compositions.

I have started adding layers of paint to the figure for this 36” x 48” painting, with the background intentionally designed to be inspired by geometric abstraction as a visual nod to Whitney’s signature style. The layered colors, structured forms, and rhythmic spacing bring early movement and energy to the piece. I’ll refine the background further before transitioning to the figure.

In early 2014, when I was around 32 and living in Australia after finishing my first Master’s degree in Fine Art at RMIT University in Melbourne, Victoria, I made a small series of self-portrait drawings. These two are the only pieces from that series I managed to document. The rest have been lost over time. I’m sharing the surviving works here to offer a glimpse into that early part of my artistic journey.

Portrait No. 18: Stanley Whitney (Work-in-Progress)

I’m excited to share the latest progress in my ongoing Black Male Artist Professor Portrait Series, now reaching Portrait No. 18 out of 25. This new work honors the renowned American artist Stanley Whitney, widely respected for his groundbreaking contributions to geometric abstraction, rhythm, and vibrant color compositions.

I have officially completed drawing the figure for this 36” x 48” acrylic and paper on canvas painting, with the background intentionally designed to be inspired by geometric abstraction as a visual nod to Whitney’s signature style. The layered colors, structured forms, and rhythmic spacing bring early movement and energy to the piece. I’ll refine the background further before transitioning to the figure.

The portrait figure itself will be Fauvist-inspired, emphasizing bold color, expressive brushwork, and emotional intensity, celebrating the energy and creativity Whitney brings to his work. I’m especially excited to draw his figure, as his distinct and compelling profile promises to bring depth, personality, and richness to the final composition.
