Yesterday’s Pop Up was a roaring success! Thank you to everyone who came by to shop. Thank you to my sweet friends Renee, Matthew, Jimmy, Katie, and Ceasar who helped me haul my gear and mannequin to the pub (now I know who I can call if I need to move a body). 😉 Special thanks to Teresa, who hauled, set up, marketed, managed money, wrapped packages, and was her charming, bubbly self. MTA Metro-North Railroad is hiring Trackworkers to install, repair, maintain and inspect all portions of track, including rail, ties, switches and insulated joints. The application deadline is May 20. No application fee is required.
The starting rate for this position is $20.66 per hour (65 percent of the full rate). The annual wage-progression scale is: Year 1, 65 percent; Year 2, 70 percent; Year 3, 75 percent; Year 4, 80 percent; Year 5, 90 percent; Year 6, 100 percent. The full rate of pay is $31.78 per hour.
Manual Labor
The duties of Trackworkers include preparing track for installation of ties using manual tools such as a ballast fork and a pick; removing and installing ties using manual tools such as a sledgehammer and a lining bar; securing ties and rail using power and manual tools; cutting and installing rail using power tools; loading, unloading and transporting tools and equipment (such as ties, a trackjack and a lag gun) to and from a worksite; picking up debris along right-of-way and yards; clearing brush and removing snow; working as part of a team to complete tasks; and handling other duties as assigned.
Heavy Lifting
Trackworkers work various hours, days, shifts and locations. They must be able to lift and carry tools and materials weighing up to 55 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 75 pounds; strong enough to use tools such as a sledgehammer, claw bar, lag gun, etc.; and able to climb on and off track machinery. Shifts consist of prolonged standing, bending, crouching and walking while performing job responsibilities primarily on uneven surfaces such as track bed.
Trackworkers are exposed to various weather conditions and work in close proximity to moving railroad equipment and/or track machinery. They work in areas with low lighting and a high degree of dirt and dust.
To qualify for consideration, you must have a high-school diploma or its educational equivalent, one year of full-time work involving manual labor, and have reading-comprehension abilities, interpersonal skills and verbal-communication skills. You must be safety-conscious and able to work with others in a group. A valid commercial driver's license is preferred.
Background Check
The railroad warns that not everyone who meets the minimum qualifications will be scheduled for an interview. To be selected for a position, you must also undergo a background investigation (including employment, education and criminal history) and pass the interview. You will also need to pass a basic reading-comprehension test and physical-abilities test.

Written as a special commission from CualaNYC. Directed by Bríd Gallagher. A Girl of Genius portrays the life of Alice Milligan: Methodist, journalist, poet, Irish speaker and ardent nationalist. Born in 1865 in County Tyrone, she brought together Protestant and Catholic in cultural clubs she founded in Belfast. A vital figure in the Irish cultural revival, she knew personally most of the well-known figures of her time – Yeats, Casement, Connolly, Hyde, Maud Gonne and Eoin McNeill. Writing in the Irish Review in September 1914, Thomas MacDonagh, described her as “the best Irish poet of her generation”. In 1926 George Russell wrote: “Thirty years ago there did not seem to be a people in Europe less visited by the creative fire. Then a girl of genius, Miss Milligan, began to have premonitions…”
