Did you know that Texarkana has had a “Come From Away” moment in real life?

Twenty years ago, Texarkana opened its doors.

After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, evacuees began arriving in our community. By September 3, the City of Texarkana had activated the Southwest Center to receive busloads of displaced people.

And Texarkana showed up. 👏👏

Emergency responders, hospitals, physicians, pharmacies, businesses, organizations, and volunteers came together to offer shelter, medical care, clothing, food, medications, and, perhaps most importantly, a safe place to land.

It’s a story that feels remarkably familiar to the one we’re preparing to tell onstage!!

Come From Away tells the true story of Gander, Newfoundland, where thousands of airline passengers were unexpectedly stranded after the September 11 attacks. Faced with frightened strangers who had nowhere else to go, an entire community opened its doors and asked one simple question: How can we help?

Just four years later, Texarkana was called to do something very similar.

Texarkana Repertory Company invites you to experience Come From Away, a celebration of the extraordinary things ordinary people can do when their neighbors need them most.

COME FROM AWAY OPENS IN TWO WEEKS!

Talk "aboot" EXCITED!

Come From Away is the gripping story of a quirky community in Canada who opened their doors, and their hearts, to complete strangers following the abrupt halt of air travel immediately after the collapse of the Twin Towers.

For five days, they took complete charge of the care for these “Come From Aways”.

With toe-tapping tunes and a huge heart, this show’s tender, folksy atmosphere feels like a warm hug for your soul.

We are honored to tell this remarkable true story, and it means even more that we will be opening on the 25th anniversary of September 11.

Good morning, friends!

At its core, Come From Away is a musical about community, kindness, and compassion.

One of those community members was Bonnie Harris, of the Gander SPCA. While others were caring for the human passengers, Bonnie stepped in and made sure all of the animals on the diverted flights were well loved and cared for.

In that spirit, we are SO excited to announce that we are partnering with the Texarkana Animal League for a special promotion for Come From Away.

Since 1994, TAL has provided protection and care for abandoned, abused, neglected and unwanted furry friends. They also promote and provide programs and services that benefit both animals, and people. They currently care for critters in Bowie, Cass, Miller and Little River counties! TAL is largely volunteer-run and all proceeds directly benefit animal care and adoptions.

Cast member Amanda Talbot is a regular volunteer with the League. You can see her in Come From Away as Bonnie Harris! Talk about perfect casting!

From now until the end of the run, anyone who donates pet supplies to TAL will receive 10% off admission for the show!

They are always in major need of cat and dog food, toys, blankets, cleaning supplies, and other essentials.

The Texarkana Animal League is located at 5820 Richmond Rd. They are open on Saturdays from 10 AM – 3 PM.

You must drop your donations off during business hours, and sign your name to receive your discount code.

NOW BOARDING

Tickets for Come From Away are on sale NOW!

We open in just THREE WEEKS, on the 25th anniversary of September 11th.

There have been few events in our nation’s history that have shaped this country—and maybe the world --quite like 9/11.

Following the events of that fateful day, flights all across US and Canadian airspace were grounded.

38 of those flights touched down in the small island community of Gander, Newfoundland, carrying around 7,000 stranded strangers.

The people of Gander immediately stepped up in any way they could—offering shelter, food, clothes, and comfort. Inviting these “Come From Aways” with open arms, and open hearts.

It did not matter that they came from a far away place, that they spoke different languages, or that they lived, loved and believed differently.

For five days, in the midst of all that darkness, this shining example of community and kindness was a beacon of hope, the echoes of which can still be felt all these years later.

This show is fast-faced, funny and heartfelt. It is truly a hug for the soul. I have never seen anything quite like it, and we are SO EXCITED to share this experience with you.

Don’t forget to join us for our Opening Night Reception, immediately following the first performance! Fun snacks, and friendship await! FREE WITH TICKET PURCHASE!

We are just FOUR WEEKS out from Come From Away! ✈️🌎

Come From Away is a remarkable story based on true events and real people.

In the immediate wake of 9/11, flights all across US and Canadian airspace were grounded, making unexpected stops all over both countries.

38 of those flights touched down in the small island community of Gander, Newfoundland.

Overnight, the population nearly doubled as THOUSANDS of frightened and exhausted passengers deplaned.

Upon receiving the news, the townsfolk IMMEDIATELY began to mobilize.

They saw needs and filled them, without hesitation or expectation of getting anything in return. Giving out of the kindness of the hearts, because it was the right thing to do.

Thanks to these heroes, nearly 7,000 people from all across the globe were housed, clothed, fed and comforted for five days of uncertainty and confusion.

This is a clever whirlwind of a musical, with a quirky cast of characters, and a heartwarming, feel-good vibe that will stay with you after you depart.

Tickets go on sale NEXT FRIDAY!
