We are honored to return to the Korean Culture Festival this fall!

📍 Indiana State University, University Hall Theater and Atrium

Through music and dance, we’ll share a small journey through Japan — from the peaceful beauty of our homeland to the powerful energy of a Japanese festival.

🎶 We’ll begin with a beloved Japanese song,
🌸 then a beautiful Japanese dance,
🔥 and finish with the powerful energy of Soran Bushi!

Come watch our Japanese performance and celebrate culture, connection, and community with us!

There are some hands-on cultural activities for all ages before the performance too!

🌕 Welcome September – A Time to Admire the Moon in Japan 🌾

September brings Tsukimi (月見), the Japanese tradition of enjoying and appreciating the beauty of the autumn moon.

In Japan, people have admired the moon for centuries. During Tsukimi, families may place susuki (pampas grass) and seasonal offerings such as rice cakes called tsukimi dango by the window or in a special place, and simply take time to look up at the moon.

What makes Tsukimi special is that there is no need for a big celebration. It is about pausing for a moment, enjoying the beauty of nature, and appreciating the changing seasons.

The moon is something we all share, no matter where we live. But in Japan, there has long been a special cultural habit of simply stopping to admire it. 🌕✨

🇯🇵A Special Day Exploring Tajimi🇺🇸✨

Our Discover Tajimi & Japanese Snacks workshop was more than just learning about a Japanese city—it became a beautiful time of connection.

We learned about Tajimi, Terre Haute’s sister city, explored its long history of ceramics and mosaic tiles, and enjoyed some Japanese snacks from my recent trip to Japan. 🍘

But what made this workshop especially meaningful were the unexpected connections.

One participant who had lived and worked in Tajimi as an English teacher many years ago brought a photo album from that time. She shared her memories and stories with us, giving us a glimpse into the friendship between Tajimi and Terre Haute from decades ago. 📖❤️

Another participant brought a personal collection of Japanese swords made in the Tajimi region many years ago, giving us a chance to see a piece of local Japanese history right here in Terre Haute. ⚔️

As we listened to these stories and shared these treasures, I felt how deeply the connections between people can continue across time and distance.
I’m so grateful for everyone who shared their memories, stories, and pieces of history with us.

May the friendship between Tajimi and Terre Haute continue for many more years, and may the connection between our two communities continue to grow. 🌿🇯🇵🇺🇸

Our first Amatsuhi workshop after returning from Japan! ✈️
During my recent trip to Japan, I had an opportunity to visit Tajimi city in Gifu prefecture - Terre Haute's sister city!
At our next workshop, we'll take a little journey to Tajimi, and learn about its unique culture and its special connection with Terre Haute.
We'll also have a chance to taste some Japanese snacks that I brought back from Japan!

🏮 Welcome August – Obon, a Time of Family and Remembrance 🌿

August is one of the most meaningful months in Japan because of Obon (お盆), a traditional time to honor our ancestors.

During Obon, many people return to their hometowns to visit family, pray at temples, and clean family graves. It is believed that the spirits of loved ones return to visit their families during this special time.

Across Japan, communities also gather for Bon Odori (盆踊り), traditional summer dances that have been passed down through generations. Today, these festivals are joyful celebrations where neighbors, friends, and visitors dance together, creating a wonderful sense of community.

Obon reminds us that family is more than those around us today—it is also the generations who came before us. Through remembrance, gratitude, and celebration, this tradition continues to bring people together every summer.

🎐 Welcome July – The Season of Thoughtful Giving in Japan 🎁

I'm excited to be sharing this month's post from Japan!

July marks the beginning of summer, but it is also the season of Ochugen (お中元), a long-standing Japanese tradition of giving gifts to express gratitude to those who have supported us.

One of my favorite places to experience this tradition is the depachika—the beautiful food halls in Japanese department stores. During this season, they are filled with colorful displays of carefully wrapped sweets, fruits, tea, and many other special gifts.

In Japan, the presentation of a gift is considered just as meaningful as the gift itself. Every detail reflects appreciation, respect, and care for the recipient.

I had to take some photos of the depachika displays to share with you—hope you enjoy them! 🥰🇯🇵

☔ Welcome June – The Season of Rain and Hydrangeas in Japan 🌿

June marks the beginning of tsuyu, Japan’s rainy season. While rainy days may sound gloomy, they bring a special beauty to the landscape.

One of the flowers most closely associated with June is the hydrangea. Its colorful blooms thrive in the rain and can be seen in gardens, parks, and temple grounds throughout Japan.

June is also the time of koromogae, a traditional seasonal change when students and many workers switch from winter uniforms to lighter summer attire. It reflects a Japanese appreciation for living in harmony with the changing seasons.

For many people, June is a gentle transition into summer—a time of fresh greenery, soft rain, and quiet beauty.

【Recap】

At yesterday’s Japanese Calligraphy Workshop, we practiced the kanji 風 (“wind”), inspired by the fresh and gentle season in Japan. 🍃

Everyone was able to relax, slow down, and focus on their brush movements and breathing while writing. It was wonderful to see each person creating their own unique expression through calligraphy.

At the end of the workshop, participants completed their final piece on a folding fan. Each fan became a one-of-a-kind artwork in the world. 🖌️

In Japanese culture, folding fans are considered symbols of good fortune and a bright future because they open outward and spread wide.

I was so happy to see everyone enjoying the experience and creating such beautiful works.

We’ll take a little break for summer, and our next workshop will be in August. I’m already looking forward to seeing everyone again! 🇯🇵✨
