We love our Mephitidae, Ruffles! ♥️♥️
Happy Skunk Day!
To celebrate, we thought it was time for you to Know Your Mephitidae!
The Mephitidae family of mammals includes the Skunks & Stink Badgers. These animals are best known for deterring predators using highly specialized a**l scent glands that eject a potent, foul-smelling musk. The spray contains sulfur-based compounds called thiols, which bond strongly to skin and fur and can be difficult to neutralize. Myths like cleaning with tomato juice, vinegar, beer, and water all do not work. Only a formula of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap will help. The dish soaps helps break down the oils and the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda release oxygen molecules that chemically alter the thiols, rendering it odorless. Because the spray is costly for the animal to make, taking over a week to replenish, often a series of physical warnings proceed being sprayed. These include stomping, scooting, tail raising, and handstands. When these gestures are observed, a slow, calm retreat is advised. Skunks are native to North, Central, and South America while stink badgers are found in Asia. The family is divided into four genera. Mydaus contains the two Asian stink badgers. The Conepatus genus contains the four hog-nosed skunks. Spilogale is the genus contains the smallest members of the family, known as spotted skunks. The final genus, Mephitis, contains two species, the Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), being the most common, widespread, and well-known. All are opportunistic omnivores with an adaptable and wide-ranging diet. As a result of their flexible diet, they have even adapted to thrive in urban landscapes. Despite their stinky reputation, these animals prefer to be left alone and are not aggressive unless threatened. They also provide many benefits to the ecosystems where they live, including pest control, soil aeration, and seed dispersal. Now You Know Your Mephitidae!
