danceTactics members then and now! This week, we asked company manager and guest dancer Brendan McCall what got him into dance. His repsonse:

“My family did not want me to go into the arts. They wanted me to go to the Catholic university down the street from the Jesuit high school I went to in California. But I got an acting scholarship to go to New York University, and moved to the other side of the country in 1990. The kind of work I got to see in the ‘downtown scene’—Reza Abdoh, Wooster Group, Mabou Mines, Richard Foreman—blew me away. I had never heard of ‘dance/theater’ or ‘physical theater’ or ‘Contact Improvisation.’ But once I discovered it, plus began studying with folks like Paul Langland, Mary Overlie, and Nina Martin in school, I was hooked. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” https://www.dancetactics.org/

A reminder of the spaces that make this work possible.

Keith A. Thompson has been named a 2026 American Dance Festival Footprints Choreographer, with a new commissioned work debuting July 11–12 in Durham.

The American Dance Festival remains a vital environment for developing, testing, and presenting new choreographic work—supporting process, collaboration, and the evolution of ideas over time.

We’re proud to continue creating within this space. Follow along and subscribe to the danceTactics newsletter at the link in bio to stay updated. https://www.dancetactics.org/what-about-dance
