Reflecting on the life and legacy of Annette Marie Gutierrez Turk (1944–2026) — a 15th generation New Mexican and Spanish Market artist.
Annette played an important role in the creation of our own Sabanilla Weaving Apprenticeship, led by Benita Ortega-Rael.
Years ago — she taught Benita colcha embroidery. And when Benita was ready, Annette mentored her in learning to weave the sabanilla textile for colcha. She lent her a loom. She encouraged her to keep at it.
Now, Benita is teaching sabanilla warping and weaving at our studio for colcha bordadoras — with 7+ students and counting.
We're so saddened to hear of Annette's passing and sending love to her dear family and friends. And we're so grateful to Annette for keeping traditions alive.
Such a legacy.
