It saddens me greatly to see this site up in flames.

The dormitory at Ft Wingate boarding school where the original Navajo Code Talkers were sworn into the Marine Corps. Additionally, many of the estimated 420 Navajo Code Talkers were graduates of Fort Wingate.

This is a building with much historical significance and, though condemned, has managed to avoid destruction because of that. Many had wanted to have this site considered for a museum location.

Today as I landed after a training mission, Ma’ii was sitting at the end of the runway. He didn’t cross my path, but I wonder now if this was part of the message he was brining.

If you are unfamiliar with this building and it’s significance, you can watch this video on my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJQVR4aOdWv/?igsh=MWVvN3QwanV3NTdxZQ==

"Shiprock" is a 2001 original lithograph by my uncle, Navajo Artist, R.C. Gorman.

Created following the September 11th attacks on the WTC tower in NYC.

A Navy veteran and son of one of the Original-29 Navajo Code Talkers, R.C. - like many Native Americans - was impacted by events of the United States as well as those of the Navajo Nation.

R.C. was born in a time when Navajo voting rights were still restricted.

Despite that, R.C. and his father were proud to serve their country.

There is a reason why nihimásaní dóó nihinálí asdzáá, cheii dóó nálí hasteen told us the things they did. Be up before the sun, run, pray, give offerings, be thankful, respect all ways of life equally, etc.
These, among others, are the tools they handed us to fight the monsters that could possibly pay a visit. Monsters such as poverty, hunger, depression or other mental health issues, laziness, sickness, etc. The tools our ancestors gave us are here to keep us strong and healthy.
Remember who you are and where you come from, by using the tools, and you will remain blessed ❤️

MoM - Month of May: GORMAN Mothers

May 10th - "Leila With Child" a 1978 Original Lithograph by R.C. Gorman

"I remember one time I was posing with one of my babies, and she was nursing. The whole time we were sitting, I was looking at those adorable little feet and thinking how beautiful Gorman would draw them. But he covered them up with a blanket! He did capture, though, in his own way, the motherly feeling I had." - Laila Bynoe

Laila Bynoe was one of R.C.'s regular models. She would have been 36 when this lithograph was made and it falls within the time period when she was modeling for him. I can't help but wonder if Leila and Laila aren't one-and-the-same...
