Haunting/Holding is an intermodal group exhibition which opened on August 1, 2026 at The Projects/Space in Tucson, Arizona and runs through October 3. The show brings together thirteen artists, writers and creators from across the Southwest, curated by Béalleka Makau, bianca gabrielle goyette and Lauren Dana Smith.

The exhibition asks what we hold onto and what we release - the inheritances, hauntings and histories that shape us long after their origins fade. Drawing upon the word’s etymological roots in “to frequent” and “to bring home,” the show invites haunting not as something frightening but as a form of return: a preoccupation with what we were once part of, or still are. The works in the exhibition span grief, attachment, joyful remembrance, and excavation of self and environment – surfacing what’s been buried, intentionally or not.

“My practice is driven by questions that refuse simple answers. How can a society depend upon Black life while denying Black freedom? What remains after erasure? What becomes possible when Black life is no longer organized around extraction, scarcity, or survival?

At the heart of my practice is a belief that Black people deserve not only visibility, but the freedom, dignity, rest, care, abundance, and self-determination necessary to fully experience life. Yet the realities of American history and its present conditions continue to place profound distance between that possibility and lived experience. My work inhabits that distance.

Rather than accepting those conditions as inevitable, I use photography to search for
other ways of seeing and imagining. Increasingly, my work is less concerned with documenting oppression than with asking what lies beyond it. I am interested in images that make room for liberation, joy, tenderness, memory, and future in which Black life is no longer defined by what it must endure, but by what it is free to become.”

We’ve set our sights high so that we can produce an absolutely exceptional archival publication that reflects our expansive abstract art community here in New Mexico, and one that will celebrate our 5th anniversary of operation, in 2027. Please Save the Date for our Upcoming Exhibition! The Millicent Rogers Museum and the Taos Abstract Artist Collective (TAAC) are proud to announce Where Silver Meets the Sky, What the Body Carries, a collaborative exhibition and curatorial response curated by guest curator Myvanwy Birds and Millicent Rogers Museum curator Claire Pelaez Motsinger.

Opening September 12, 2026, the exhibition brings contemporary Indigenous artists into conversation with objects held in the Millicent Rogers Museum collection. Rather than treating these works as artifacts of the past, the exhibition recognizes them as carriers of knowledge, memory, presence, and living cultural traditions. The exhibition explores what happens when the voices and visions of Indigenous artists today meet the creations of those who came before—revealing an ongoing dialogue across generations.

Mac Balentine (b. 1989) is an artist who lives and works in Taos, NM. He received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2012) and his MFA from the University of Georgia (2021). His work has been shown at venues including: Atlanta Contemporary (Atlanta, 2012), American Swedish Institute (Minneapolis, 2015), Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (Gimpo, South Korea, 2022), and P.A.D. (NYC, 2022).

“My drawings are built from simple building blocks: circles and arcs. By varying the arrangement and relative density of these elements, complex structures emerge. Though precisely defined, these structures take on qualities of fluidity and expansiveness. My intention is that the drawings offer viewers a chance to experience this interplay of static and fluid form within themselves.

Kaylie Boyle is a multidisciplinary artist based in Taos, New Mexico, originally from Omaha, Nebraska. A Fine Arts major at UNM–Taos and is an artist-in-residence at Revolt Gallery. Working across ink, paint, and film, Boyle creates textural, intuitive pieces shaped by play and experimentation. She embraces imperfection, allowing vulnerability to guide the process and become visible form. Her work explores the tension between sorrow and joy, inspired by the idea of being “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing.” For Boyle, joy is an act of resistance and making is catharsis. Outside the studio, she reads poetry, makes music, and wanders the mountains.

“This jacket was made during a residency in New York City at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan out of a found theater curtain. It was my first time sewing a garment. The printing on the back is handwritten obituaries about past versions of myself that I’ve grieved, ranging from the girl who stopped believing in Santa Claus to the girl I was before being diagnosed with cancer. This is a garment of grief but also a garment of joy and evolution, taking the experiences of the past, and though we still carry them with us, reclaiming them and still walking forward with them on our backs, but still shining and radiant. This piece is focused on the evolution of grief and joy walking hand in hand.”

Jan Marie Sessler has been living and creating art in Taos, New Mexico since 1993. She has exhibited widely in New Mexico, the U.S. and internationally. In 1998 Sessler was selected by David Witt, former curator of The Harwood Museum of Art for the exhibition“Taos: The Next Generation”. In 2003 she participated in “Contemporary Art / Taos” at The Harwood Museum and again in 2020 for the second iteration of this exhibition. In 2005 Sessler had her first museum solo exhibition, “Jan Sessler: Works On Paper” at the Harwood Museum of Art.
In 2008 Jan was awarded a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She was part of the inaugural biennial “New City of Ladies” for the New Mexico Women in the Arts, at
Turner Carroll Gallery in Santa Fe in March of 2025. And in 2026 she participated in “The Drawing Show” guest-curated by Ann Landi at the Gallery at Willa in Taos. Born in Dayton, Ohio, Sessler holds a B.A. in International Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She studied painting, life drawing and printmaking for many years at UNM/Taos. She also studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and in Aix-en-Provence, France where, during her junior year of university she took courses in studio art and art history that solidified her resolve to create art in life. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, New Mexico, Taos Historic Museums, the Ross Art Museum/Ohio Wesleyan University and the Dayton Art Institute.

Jessica Grand is a visual artist, composer, and filmmaker originally from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York.

Now based in Taos, New Mexico her work spans up-cycled visual art, audio/visual music production, animation and film.

Jessica Grand has been featured in notable regional exhibitions, such as the Herspective women’s show at Revolt Gallery, the Taos Abstract Artist Collective (TAAC) shows, and the Make-Shift exhibition at OmniHum Gallery. In July of 2026 Jessica Grand composed an original soundtrack for the First Edition of the Rio Hondo Artists’ Residency dance showcase at the Wildflower Playhouse.

Grand blends everyday experiences and discarded objects into thought-provoking installations and abstract pieces. Her work centers on self-accountability and “present-mindedness,” challenging viewers to reflect on their daily relationships with themselves, people, places, and everyday objects.

In addition to her arts practice, Grand works heavily in event management. She recently served as an event manager for Taos’s first ever pop-culture festival, OTaosuCon, hosted at the UNM-Taos Klauer Campus and is the Production Assistant for UNM-Taos in their Film and Digital Media (FDMA) department.

Flor Serna is a weaver and wool worker based in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. Flor developed a strong interest in both the art and culture of weaving after having met weavers in the community and having learned about the holistic nature of the art inextricably linked to the land via sheep. She is passionate about preserving and protecting New Mexican cultural traditions, including Rio Grande weaving because her ancestors have lived in New Mexico along the Rio Grande for over nine generations, and because she is interested in strengthening her relationship to the land that she lives on.

While her work is rooted in traditional styles, her work simultaneously intentionally deviates from them. Her work oscillates between structure and spontaneity, combining calculated decisions with intuitive departures. She is compelled by the embodiment required of the Rio Grande walking loom, and in it she finds a resonance with the rhythms of her inner world. While each weaving begins with a loose plan, each tapestry inevitably takes on a life of its own, shaped by instinct, imperfection, and impulse.
