Got my first doozy today! (6 layer including plywood as 1 layer)

Went out for a measurement today, homeowner said it was a 3 layer roof. Peeled into one of the RVOs and found this.

My best breakdown from top to bottom: (1st) Green 3 tab (2nd) Green 3 tab (3rd) 1/2” CDX Ply (?4&5¿) I think it’s two layered of additional green three tab, but without actually tearing off a small section I couldn’t figure it out (6) Cedar shingles

If this is wrong how do I remove it

This is supposed to be the cap for a bathroom fan vent, but something about it does not look right to me.

I am wondering whether both the insulation around it and the type of vent cap are incorrect.

The white material appears to be silicone sealant, and I am not sure how difficult it will be to remove without damaging anything.

Am I right to be concerned, or is this actually a normal installation?

If it needs to be replaced, what is the safest way to remove the old cap and clean off the silicone?

Is this acceptable?

I noticed something strange after the roofers finished the job.

One section appears to have a completely different type of shingle than the surrounding areas, and from the street it makes the roof look unfinished or patched together.

Maybe there is a legitimate reason for using a different material in that spot, but it definitely stands out and does not look consistent with the rest of the roof.

Is this a normal roofing detail with a specific purpose, or does it look like something the crew should come back and fix?

My crew installed the shingles too far past the drip edge and I'm not sure how to fix it.

A homeowner sent me this photo after the heavy rain last weekend and said water was pouring over the gutters instead of draining properly.

To be fair, it was a torrential downpour. But after taking a closer look, he is right about one thing: the shingles appear to be overhanging the gutter by about an inch more than they should.

We installed Bulldog gutter guards last week, and while that probably is not helping the situation, we normally do not see this kind of issue with these guards.

Now I am wondering whether the real problem is the shingle overhang, the gutter-guard installation, or a combination of both.

Has anyone dealt with this before? What is the best way to correct it without creating a bigger problem?

Do we have hail damage?

We know our shingles were already getting to the end of their life. Two nights ago we had some significant hail. I got up on the roof to see what I could see afterwards. But I don't have the knowledge to differentiate between what is just aging shingles and what is hail damage. What do you folks think?

What is this part of the roof called?

I swear I’ve heard this called a cornice strip before, but that doesn’t sound quite right to me.

Does anyone know the proper name for this piece? I’m trying to figure out what it’s actually called so I don’t sound like I’m making up roofing terms when I ask about it.

Roofing job my parents paid 2k for.

Here’s the story, and honestly, it still makes my blood boil.

My parents had a leak in their porch roof that was causing the porch ceiling to sag. My dad is 80 now, so he contacted Angie’s List, and they sent out three different contractors to deal with it.

The first contractor replaced the old wooden ceiling slats, which had been there since the house was built in 1903, with some kind of sheet vinyl. Then the first rainstorm came, and the vinyl sagged.

The second contractor came out, looked at everything, and said there was a hole in the roof, but he wasn’t equipped to handle it. He said Angie would send someone else. Honestly, respect to that guy for being upfront.

Then the third guy shows up and tells my parents that Angie sent him because he was “the best” and that they didn’t need to worry anymore. He gets on the roof, comes back down, and says he’ll need $2,000 for materials and labor to patch it. My dad writes him a check, and the guy immediately takes it to a check-cashing place.

He comes back and does the absolute mess you can see in the photo.

Then it gets even weirder.

I called Angie to figure out why they were sending people like this to my elderly parents’ house. Turns out Angie had never heard of the guy who introduced himself as Cody. According to the email, they had actually sent someone named Angelna. My parents say Cody showed up at the scheduled time, said he was with Angie, and that Angelna was sitting in the truck while Cody did the work.

At this point, we’ve pretty much accepted that the $2,000 is gone. I’m also telling my dad he needs to stop writing checks to people on the spot.

Be careful out there, especially if you have older parents hiring contractors. Some people have no shame.

Does anyone have advice on filing an insurance claim when you’re not completely sure what caused the damage?

I found a few small holes in the roof, about half an inch wide, and there are three of them in different areas. One of them went deep enough to damage the sheathing underneath.

I’m trying to figure out what could cause something like this before I call insurance, but I honestly have no idea where to start.

Has anyone seen roof damage like this before? Would you file a claim as unknown damage, or should I have a roofer inspect it first and give an opinion on the cause?
