Today's museum spotlight is Mother and Child, c.1980s by Louisiane Saint Fleurant.

Louisiane Saint Fleurant was the only woman in the Saint Soleil movement and started painting in her late forties. Born in Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, a coastal town west of Port-au-Prince, she worked as a cook at the Saint Soleil commune. She painted privately in her room until her artistic talent was discovered by Maud Guerdes Robard.

A core member of Saint Soleil, Saint Fleurant helped spearhead Cinq Soleil after the initial group dissolved in the late 1970s. Saint Fleurant is acclaimed for her paintings of families, children, the female figure, and Vodou imagery, inspired by her own motherhood and sprituality.

Saint Fleurant once remarked that she “paints the spirit of Saint Soleil,” which nods to her deep spiritual and artistic commitment to the movement.

Come check out this work in our exhibition "The Five Suns: Haiti’s Saint Soleil" on your next trip to the Tampa Museum of Art!
