They didn’t ask Guillo to reproduce a photograph. They gave him memories.

Two collectors came to Guillo Pérez 3 with photographs from their travels through Eastern Europe, of two places that had stayed with them long after they’d returned home. They showed him the places. Told him what they remembered, and more importantly, what those places had felt like.

Then they let him interpret them. These two paintings are what came back.

We love this photo of the three of them together, taken in our former gallery space. The finished piece doesn’t have to be a copy of the photograph. It can hold the feeling of a place as much as the place itself.

Both works now live with the collectors who inspired them.

Meet the Nature Series by John Gurbacs: three original oil paintings centered on one of Florida’s most familiar plants, the croton.

John is an NEA Fellow whose work is held in four Tampa Bay museum collections, and his practice has long been built around an idea: that the patterns we see in nature repeat themselves everywhere. A tree branch and a bolt of lightning can share the same underlying structure if you look closely enough.

These three prove he means it. One plant, studied until it stops looking ordinary.

🏴‍☠️ Tampa doesn’t just tolerate pirates. It built a whole identity around them.

Gasparilla every year. A football team named after buccaneers. Over a century turning a fictional pirate legend into local tradition. Live somewhere long enough, and that stuff gets into the work whether an artist means it to or not.

Guillo Pérez 3 GUILLO PÉREZ III has spent years building his life and his practice here in Tampa, and Captain Grey Beard feels right at home here. Moonlight breaking through storm clouds that look almost alive, a ship cutting through the water, the kind of drama this city has been telling itself stories about for generations. That’s not just research. That’s just what comes out when a place gets under your skin.

Preseason football is back in Tampa this week, and honestly, a pirate ship painting feels like the right thing to be looking at right now.

Meet W***y Pérez, the artist behind some of our most collected work. Son of Maestro Guillo Pérez, he grew up inside his father’s world, not discovering painting later in life but raised in it from the start. In 1984, that lineage became a formal role, when he became Director of the Escuela Taller Guillo Pérez in Santo Domingo, the same school his father founded.

He studied at the Art Students League of New York, and separately trained with Maestro Cándido Bidó and other artists in the Dominican Republic. Forty two solo exhibitions later, across the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Spain, and beyond, and he still keeps circling back to one subject the way some artists never stop returning to a single question, the sea, its geometry, its color, its memory.

Swipe through and you’ll see exactly what that looks like across a real range. Acuario I and Acuario II study that world up close. Mar Caribe and Sailboats II pull back to the horizon itself. And in that last wall, the range widens even further, Hombre Versus Biodiversidad, Fish Tank, Abstract Fish I and II, proof this is one artist working across real scale, not just one register.
