While Art Fair Tampa reimagines what a modern art fair can be, The Rooted Door is dedicated to transforming raw, unconventional environments and unexpected spaces into groundbreaking, site-specific theatrical worlds.

Together, we share an uncompromising commitment to our city—proving that world-class, boundary-pushing art belongs right here at home.

Recognized locally as a Tampa Bay Times “Best of the Best” Bronze winner for Best Local Theater Company, The Rooted Door has also earned major international acclaim—taking home top global creative, design, and community impact honors (including Platinum Hermes, Gold MUSE, and Communitas awards) for our flagship production, Secret Spaces.

Most people experience opera from row K: protected by distance, dim lighting, and velvet ropes.

Watching this breathtaking moment from / —where unamplified vocal power shifts the entire atmosphere of the space—sparked a question in our design room.

In our world, the fourth wall doesn’t exist. 
Imagine opening a heavy, unmarked door into low amber light and rough masonry, only to find a voice of this caliber singing directly to you. No microphones. No stage. Just raw acoustic resonance shaking the floorboards two feet away. 

We’re curating the live experiences for our upcoming spaces right now, and we believe great art should be felt, not just heard:

Set Dressing (noun): Clues hiding in plain sight that you only notice the second time around.

In an immersive world, nothing on the stage is an accident. Every prop, texture, and shadow carries history—and tells a chapter of the story before a single line is spoken.

1931 Factory Floor: Authentic Cuesta Rey cigar boxes and tools transport the room to a defining era, matched by real dried to***co leaves hung overhead and hand-stained paper treatments inspired by original Ybor City factories.

The Living Room: A period-authentic rotary phone and tabletop radio anchor the era, alongside an original issue of La Gaceta—Tampa’s historic Spanish-language daily since 1922—while glowing screens flicker with surreal, dreamstate visions.

The Reflection: A tense domino match played against a mirror, surrounded by walls covered in black-and-white archival Tampa photography, framed by an image of Cuba directly behind him—the homeland left behind for the life being built ahead.

The Departure: A solitary typewriter drafting final goodbye letters before the crossing to Tampa, with a suitcase packed and waiting for the journey about to unfold.
