In the late 1800s, West Tampa was built by dreamers. Spanish immigrants from Asturias and Galicia arrived with the Cubans, settling in two enclaves across Tampa—drawn by opportunity in the cigar trade. They didn't just provide labor; they built an entire way of life. Mutual aid societies served as hospitals, small businesses turned empty lots into thriving marketplaces, and civic clubs became the beating heart of communities.

This is where Manuel Alonso's story begins.

His father came from Asturias, Spain; his mother from Havana, Cuba—bringing together two nations' hopes in one family. Manuel worked in his father's grocery store and as a selector at a cigar factory alongside his mother, before opening Alonso Sundries and eventually Alonso Drugs—not just a business, but a tradition, a gathering place that gave West Tampa a sense of community.

That spirit didn't end with Manuel. It lives through The Rooted Door.

The Rooted Door echoes the same values that built these neighborhoods: community care, cultural preservation, mutual aid, and spaces where people gather to strengthen the bonds that hold us together. Through immersive art experiences, scholarships, and cultural partnerships, The Rooted Door isn't just honoring West Tampa's past—it is building Tampa's future.
