Five Year ANNIVERSARY "Because of Sam" – July 29, 2024

Time Flies When You’re Changing the World

Five years ago, today, exactly, on a Monday, my team and I had the honor of bringing Sam Piazza's inspirational, transformative, anti-bullying story to the big screen at Tampa Theatre to a sold out crowd.

After it premiered that day, we were able to add the cool scene with Titus O'Neil WWE Superstar Titus O’Neil to the final version of the film. (Titus was so generous to take time from his busy schedule to be part of the YMCA surprise scene.)

Sam, his family, his friends, the media-- and the whole Tampa Bay community rallied around the goal of creating and sharing Sam’s amazing life—in order to change the world for good.

If your organization needs anti-bullying programming or if your family would like to watch the film at home to learn and be inspired, please see these options:

Book a screening for your organization or group (with a talk by Sam—and me as the film maker), by contacting me at:

https://becauseofsamthemovie.com/.../submit-the-roadshow.../

Rent the film at home for up to 48 hours at Vimeo (you don’t need a Vimeo subscription to rent it-this is a one-off rental):

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/becauseofsam

Please share this post to help us continue to share Sam’s amazing story of love, hope, and kindness.

Tomorrow, March 21, World Down Syndrome Day is a very important day!

Michael Samuel Piazza 🤗and I are taking the Because of Sam - The Movie “roadshow” to share with 500 Lamb Elementary school students to speak about inclusion and the importance of focusing on “ABILITIES” not disabilities.

Huge kudos to Ché Marie 💙💛a teacher at the school for inviting us!

We’ll be joined on stage by Ché and the awesome leader of Down Syndrome Association Of Tampa Bay Craig Woodard Sr. 💙💛

I’m so grateful to Sam and the Piazza family for allowing me into their world to help advance Sam’s amazing story!

There is nowhere on earth that I’d rather be tomorrow, and I hear Bay News 9 feels that way too… so keep an eye on the news.

It’s really hard to describe how very meaningful and impactful next Saturday in Orlando at the National Down Syndrome Congress Conference (Siblings Conference) will be for the Because of Sam - The Movie journey—what keeps coming to mind is that “you can go home again” … I’ll try to explain: If you saw the film you may recall Michael Samuel Piazza’s brother Luke talks about how, as a young kid, he attended a conference in Orlando that gave him wonderful support and information about Down syndrome. Welp, things came full circle and that very conference reached out to me to request that we show the film and have Sam speak there. They didn’t even know that the conference was actually referenced IN the film—but it’s all fallen into place and the stars have aligned (literally). Sam and his story will touch more lives on a big stage this Saturday—and I’m thrilled to be a part of the special day.

The Siblings Conference is a place to learn, be inspired, and grow. Attendees will be enlightened and encouraged to ask tough questions in a supportive environment.

Attendees will get the chance to hear from Sam Piazza, who stars in the movie "Because of Sam," about a young man with Down syndrome who overcomes bullying, wins Homecoming King, and is an advocate for people with disabilities.

The final day of Convention includes a Siblings Conference field trip to Sea World, for a day of fun with newly made friends.

Add siblings by modifying your existing convention registration or learn more here: https://ndsccenter-annual-convention.cventevents.com/event/c71e8db7-aee0-4ebb-b7db-08221f55d2b5/websitePage:5c38f1ad-b3ea-4d58-a85d-0ce9340f21d0

UPDATE:
Well, unfortunately life’s challenges have caused me to delay the completion of this film. I’ll keep you posted here on the status.

*Announcement edited above*
I'm proud and honored to announce the production of my 4th documentary film:

Historic Theatres in Tampa --which is planned to premiere this Fall, 2023.

If you've ever traveled through Tampa, you've probably walked or driven by them, and maybe didn't even realize it--many have been repurposed, destroyed, and some still remain--we are bringing them back to life through stories, pictures, film, and music--in order to tell Tampa's history, the history of filmmaking and where it all fits in US history.

The movie trailer will be out soon! We've already interviewed Mayor Jane Castor (and yes, that is her dog, Desa—and yes, she is in the movie 🐶), Tampa Theatre President John Bell, and The Rialto Theatre's owner Hope Donnelly--with many more interviews lined up.

Renee’s Story

Tampa native Renee Warmack is a producer, speaker and coach who helps others claim their power and capture their dreams through her inspirational movies, engaging events, motivational talks and coaching programs (https://powerhackplaybook.com/ordernow).📷

Renee grew up in a blue collar family and is the youngest of three girls. She overcame three major surgeries by third grade. At an early age she knew earning an athletic scholarship was the only way she could afford college. Without the means to belong to a country club she set out to learn tennis from reading books and hitting against a wall with the vision that tennis could pave her way to college. Renee excelled as a multi-sport, high school athlete capturing the county championship at the #1 singles position. She achieved her dream of playing for Hillsborough Community College and the NCAA Division I University of South Florida (USF) tennis teams on sports scholarships. Warmack earned her BA degree in Creative Writing and a Master’s degree in Public Administration at USF.

Her latest documentary, Because of Sam (BecauseofSam.com) captures the inspirational journey of PDQ employee and disabilities advocate, Sam Piazza, who has Down syndrome and who won Homecoming King at Gaither High School, in Tampa. The movie first screened at Tampa Theatre to a sold out crowd in 2019, winning the distinguished Tampa’s Downtown Partnership Urban Excellence People’s Choice Award. Sam and Renee are available to bring the film to groups and to talk about their journey. Book here: https://becauseofsamthemovie.com/roadshow/

In 2008, she produced, directed and wrote “A Community with a Dream: The Founding of the Children’s Board” (CBHC) a documentary that commemorates the 20th anniversary of a special taxing district in Tampa dedicated to helping kids succeed. The film describes the touching, grassroots effort that led to the creation of the CBHC. The movie premiered on government television and was widely embraced by the community.
