Congratulations to "RISE-ing" Senior David King who was selected to be a part of the 2026-2027 RISE IHSSA Student Ensemble. These students represent each of the four districts (NE, SE, NW, SW) and act as a voice of Iowa's student participants in the Iowa High School Speech Association, and serve as a sounding board for the associated IHSSA Committees.

In addition to assisting in the promotion of the educational value of speech participation, RISE explores issues around career and vocational training, citizenship and character counts, and student leadership. Members will participate in leadership seminars, awareness projects, and will assist with selected contest and festival responsibilities. Members will also facilitate local leadership projects and provide feedback on a multitude of issues directly impacting IHSSA student voices.

STC offers Theatre Arts and Advanced Theatre Arts for high school students. STC MS has a Drama Club that meets most Thursdays after school.

Theatre appears in only a fraction of schools compared to music and visual arts, leaving many K-12 students without access to theatre and drama’s unique benefits. Without consistent theatre education licensure and standards across the US, the gap continues to widen, specifically in states without strong university programs aimed at training theatre educators. Through advocacy, collective action, and coalition building, we can push for theatre education to be a part of every student’s experience, alongside music and visual art.

Inconsistent licensure requirements don’t just impact teachers—they shape the quality and equity of theatre education nationwide. This statistic elevates the urgency for our field to create a unified voice. By advocating together, building coalitions across states, and taking collective action, we can ensure every theatre student learns from a trained, supported, and qualified educator.
