Writing Prompt Wednesday!

Three characters enter a room with four chairs — but for some reason, nobody will sit in the fourth.

Maybe they're afraid of it. Maybe it belongs to someone. Maybe sitting there would send a message none of them is willing to send.

Write the scene without having anyone directly explain why the chair matters. Let your audience figure it out from what your characters do and say.

A look back at Beauty & The Bully by Michelle R. Nickens, one of the four short plays featured in Neighbors, Strangers, and Allies.

Set inside Florence’s Galleria dell’Accademia, Beauty & The Bully follows a woman trying to rebuild her confidence after the emotional damage of workplace bullying. An unexpected encounter leads her to reflect on beauty, imperfection, resilience, and the ways a stranger can sometimes help us see ourselves differently.

We were so glad to share Michelle’s thoughtful and hopeful play as part of our staged reading at Bwembya’s Market and to see its message of strength and self-worth resonate with the audience.

A look back at The Great Bagel Smuggle by Danielle Wirsansky, one of the four short plays featured in Neighbors, Strangers, and Allies.

Set on a train platform in early twentieth-century Russia, The Great Bagel Smuggle follows a sharp-witted Jewish grandmother racing against time to preserve a beloved family recipe. What begins as a frantic search for someone willing to help becomes a funny and heartfelt story about migration, memory, tradition, and the unexpected connections we make with strangers.

We loved sharing Danielle’s playful, food-filled story with the audience at Bwembya’s Market and seeing this small act of culinary resistance brought to life.

Write a short scene that builds toward the line:

“I was hoping you wouldn’t ask me that.”

Who says it? What question prompted it? Why were they dreading it? And most importantly — what happens after they finally have to answer?

Bonus challenge: Don't use the line until the final page.

A look back at Keep It Real by Bev DeMello, one of the four short plays featured in Neighbors, Strangers, and Allies.

Set against a conflict over land, development, and community responsibility, Keep It Real brings two women with a long and complicated shared history face-to-face with questions of power, legacy, race, and what it really means to stand up for the place you call home.

We were so glad to share Bev’s work as part of our staged reading at Bwembya’s Market and to hear the conversation it sparked with our audience.

A look back at What’s My Too? by Bert A. Mitchell, one of the four short plays featured in Neighbors, Strangers, and Allies.

Funny, fast-moving, and increasingly complicated, What’s My Too? follows a couple as one seemingly simple question spirals into a much bigger conversation about insecurity, honesty, relationships, and the things we may or may not actually want to know about ourselves.

We loved hearing Bert’s work brought to life as part of our staged reading at Bwembya’s Market and sharing it with such an engaged audience.

Meet the cast of Neighbors, Strangers, and Allies! 🎭✨

Twanda Harrison-McBride is a Tallahassee-based actress, martial artist, artist, singer, dancer, and writer. Primarily a theatre actress, she is also building experience in film and has frequently collaborated with the FSU Film School as a background actor. She writes short stories and poetry, dances, and holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo.

Michelle R. Nickens is a published author, playwright, business owner, arts leader, and founding member of Friends with the Write Stuff. She currently serves as President of the Theatre Tallahassee Board and was named one of Tallahassee’s 2025 “25 Women You Need to Know.”

Sarah Reid Vinyard is an actor with credits Off-Broadway, on stage, and on screen. She appeared Off-Broadway in The Secrets We Keep with White Mouse Productions. Her theatre credits include 12 Angry Men, The Laramie Project, and the world premiere of Dionysus of the Holocaust. Her film and television credits include Cruel Summer II-IV, Wild Crime, and Stripped.

Neil Coker is a Tallahassee actor, writer, singer, and theatre artist who has been active in the local theatre community since high school. He has performed in community productions, including Stop Kiss at Theatre Tallahassee, and has also worked as a theatre reviewer and journalist for the Tallahassee Democrat.

Meet the cast of Neighbors, Strangers, and Allies! 🎭✨

Leon L. Alexander is a theatre artist, actor, writer, director, and musician. He studied Dramatic Arts and Theatre at Florida State University after graduating from Tallahassee Community College, and has performed with Tallahassee Community College, Triumphant Church of God in Christ, Monticello Opera House, and Essential Theatrical Associates.

Brenda Gibbs has enjoyed countless theatrical adventures, from church basement performances to national award-winning productions. Locally, she has appeared at the Monticello Opera House, Southern Shakespeare Festival, and Theatre Tallahassee in productions including Arsenic and Old Lace, Blithe Spirit, Calendar Girls, And Then There Were None, and Always a Bridesmaid.

Shannon Wolf is a Tampa-born composer, lyricist, writer, and theatre artist whose work has been described by the Tallahassee Democrat as “moving and emotionally resonant.” A frequent collaborator with White Mouse Productions, Shannon has worked as a music director and composer/lyricist, and is the co-creator of Annexed with Danielle Wirsansky.

Meet the playwrights of **Neighbors, Strangers, and Allies**! 🎭✨

Danielle Wirsansky is a Tallahassee-based playwright, historian, theatre artist, and founder of White Mouse Productions. A PhD candidate in History at Florida State University, her creative and scholarly work often explores memory, legacy, history, identity, and the stories people carry with them.

For this weekend’s event, Danielle brings us **The Great Bagel Smuggle**, a joyful, food-filled short play about a sharp-witted Jewish grandmother, a reluctant stranger, a forbidden recipe, and a cross-border act of culinary resistance.
