🎭 FAMU Essential Theatre student Oksana Sun is spending the summer studying with the prestigious British American Drama Academy in London, England.

Through the Black British Theatre and Performance program, she is studying influential Black playwrights, participating in professional masterclasses, and attending performances at some of London’s most celebrated theatres.

Join us in congratulating Shiane Sullivan .s and Joshua Lyons on being awarded the prestigious Folio Scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in London, England.

This highly competitive scholarship recognizes exceptional talent and provides recipients the opportunity to train at one of the world’s leading drama conservatories.

We are incredibly proud of these talented student artists and look forward to seeing them represent FAMU Essential Theatre on the global stage.

Join us as Florida A&M University’s Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery and Essential Theatre proudly present the Black Masks Exhibition: A 40 Year Celebration, honoring the extraordinary legacy of Dr. Beth Turner and four decades of Black Masks Magazine.

This powerful exhibition features iconic magazine covers, photographs, and highlights from Dr. Turner’s distinguished career and her lasting impact on Black theatre and the arts.

It was a special time recognizing the hard work and talent of our students both on stage and behind the scenes. From standout performances to outstanding leadership, each award highlighted the passion that continues to drive the Essential Theatre forward.

FAMU Alum is investing $25,000 into the Graduating FAMU Essential Theater Class of 2026. “I believe in funding young artists. Majority of my career in the arts has been to support the efforts of 18-25 year olds. It is my honor. This investment into FAMU Essential Theater will be ongoing and we will galvanize other HBCU graduates to continue to support our young creatives.”

Erin Michelle Washington is a Creative Waymaker working at the intersection of arts, land stewardship, and community care in the American South. They are the founder of SoulCenter and co-founder of Clarke Street Fund , FreshGreens Market , and HBCUx. Washington is committed to imagining and designing a future where queer/trans/gnc youth are well.

🌟 We were honored to welcome back to FAMU Theatre

A proud FAMU alumna and accomplished actress, Erin shared her journey with our senior students, offering insight into the industry, encouraging them to pursue their dreams, and listening as they spoke about their future plans

From Montgomery, Alabama, Erin is a creative, scholar, and visionary who earned her MFA in Acting from the American Conservatory Theater. She is also the founder of Soul Productions , a company dedicated to developing new and impactful work

Her visit was a powerful reminder of what is possible for our students and the legacy of excellence within FAMU Theatre 💚🧡🎭

Night two of our Directing Scenes Showcase brought another dynamic evening of storytelling to the stage.

From engaging acts and scenes to the short film Voices in the Echoes and the original play It Might Not Be Such a Bad Idea If I Never Went Home Again, our students continued to showcase their creativity, range, and vision as emerging directors and storytellers.

Last night set the stage for an incredible showcase of creativity and storytelling. Our Directorial Scenes opening night brought bold choices, fresh perspectives, and powerful performances to life.
