Leadline
Leadline contestants are not restricted by age. The “Leaders” must be on foot. The “Leaders” may not ride a horse to lead. The “Leaders” may not ride on horseback with the contestant. There is not an age requirement for the “Leaders”. Barrel Racing Rules Contestant may start on either the right or left barrel. When starting on the right barrel, there will be one right and two left turns around the barrels, and when starting on the left, there will be one left and two right turns around the barrels. Cloverleaf barrel patterns only. Any additional turns will result in a no-time. A knocked down barrel will result in a 5 second penalty for each barrel down. Horse and rider must maintain forward motion at all times, or the pattern will be considered broken and result in a no time.
Flag Race Rules
The Flag will be placed in a standard coffee can with dirt to hold it upright. A staff member selected by the Producer will be the only person responsible for placing the flag in the can for each contestant. The contestant can either take a right or left direction around the barrel, but must go completely around it. The contestant will be disqualified for hitting their horse with their flag intentionally. The contestant must make it across the timer line with the flag or it will result in a no time. There is no penalty for knocking the coffee can over. There is a 5 second penalty for knocking over the barrel. A dropped flag will result in a no time.
Pole Bending Rules
The Pole Bending pattern is to be run around six poles. Each pole is to be 21 ft. apart and the first pole is to be 21 ft. from the starting line. A rope stake must be placed in the middle of the starting line of flagman or timer to measure from starting line to first pole. A horse may start either to the right or left of the first pole, and run remainder of the pattern accordingly. There shall be five (5) second penalty for each pole knocked down, even if pole is knocked back upright. Horse and rider must maintain a forward motion at all times or pattern will be considered broken and result in a no time.
Goat Undecorating
Time will start when the contestant crosses the starting line and will stop when the contestant successfully removes the ribbon from the goat tail. If the horse comes in contact with the goat or goat rope any time during the run a (10) second penalty will be assessed. If the goat should break away because of fault of the horse, the contestant will receive a no time for that run. The goat is to be tied to a stake with a rope ten (10) feet in length. Stake should be pounded completely into the ground so that no part is visible. The contestant must ride mounted on a horse from starting line to goat, dismount from horse, pull the ribbon from the goats tail and throw hands in the air. At that time the judge will drop the flag and the time will stop. In the Lead Line the “Leader” can assist the contestant in getting off the horse. The “Leader” may not help the contestant pull the ribbon from the tail unless the contestant is over the one minute mark at that time the announcer will say “it has been one minute” and at that time the “Leader” can help them pull the ribbon, however, they will place behind any contestant who completed the task on their own. In the Leadline the goat will be held by field help for the entire run. In the 6 & Under, the rider must dismount on their own and remove the ribbon from the tail on their own as well. Field help may hold the horse after the contestant stops and/or is attempting to dismount. They may not hold the horse prior to attempts to dismount. We have staff that will assist in this event. At no time, outside of leadline, will a parent be allowed in the arena.
Goat Tying (7 and up)
The goat should be held back behind the stake facing the contestant. The goat should be released when the when the contestant crosses the timer line. The goats will be tied to a stake with a rope which is ten (10) feet in length. Stake should be pounded completely into the ground. No part of it should be visible or above the ground. The goat must be thrown, and then tie any three (3) legs together with a leather string, pigging string, or rope. The goat must stay tied for five (5) seconds, or the contestant will receive no time. The five seconds will not start until contestant has cleared goat and stepped back at least 3 feet. Timing will start when contestant crosses the starting line and will stop when contestant signals the completion of the tie. If the horse crosses over or touch either the rope, stake or goat, with or without contact to the goat, the contestant will be fined ten (10) seconds. If the goat should break away because of the fault of the horse, the contestant will receive a no time for that run. If the goat should break away any other time, the contestant will receive a rerun. Once the horse has crossed the timer line – the run has started. Once the run has started, you cannot cross the timer line again mounted. Doing so will result in a no time.
Break Away Rules
The rope must be tied at end of rope with string provided by the Rockin’ C Staff, so when the calf is roped, the rope will break away from saddle horn. A cloth fabric flag is to be tied to the rope at the saddle horn. The calf’s head must pass through the loop. The loop may draw up on any part of the calf’s body behind the head. Calf must break string with no assistance from roper. If roper assists in breaking string, they will receive a no time. No time will be given if rope comes loose from saddle horn for any reason before calf is roped, or if rope does not have a flag attached. Ropers will be allowed one loop only. Back gate will remain open during all calf roping events except for 10 & Under. All contestants will use string supplied by producer no exceptions. There will be a five (5)second penalty for a broken barrier.
Tie Down Rules
Contestant must rope calf, dismount, go down rope, throw calf by hand and cross and tie any three feet. To qualify as a legal tie, there shall be at least one complete wrap around at least three legs, a half hitch and hooey. If calf is down when roper reaches it, calf must be stood on at least three feet (calf must be elevated high enough that calf can regain its feet). In the event calf has one or more feet roped, calf must be let up on what feet that are not roped. This will be Judge’s opinion and decision if calf was let up properly. After roper signals for time and Judge flags roper, that tie is complete. Tie must hold and three legs remain crossed for a period of six (6) seconds. Roper must not touch calf after giving signal until Judge has completed his examination. If the tie comes loose or calf gets to its feet before the tie has been ruled a fair one, the roper will be given a no time. The Field Flag Judge will drop flag when hooey is pulled and hands leave pigging string. It is catch as catch can. After tying the Calf the Field Flag Judge will use stop watch to time six (6) seconds from the time the roping horse takes his first step forward after the roper has remounted. Rope will not be removed from calf and rope must remain slack until Field Judge has ruled on tie. In the event of contestant's catch rope is off the calf after completion of the tie, the six (6) second time period is to start when roper clears calf. Flag Judge must watch during the six (6) second period and will stop watch in the event the calf kicks loose and use the time shown on the watch to determine whether calf was tied long enough for a qualified time. Roper will be disqualified for removing rope from calf after signaling for time, until the tie has been ruled on by the Field Judge. After re-mounting horse, if contestant intentionally does not ride forward immediately and give slack, he will be subject to disqualification. There will be a five (5) second penalty for broken barrier. Ropers may only throw one (1) loop.
