Dance Exchange

Dance Exchange Fueled by generosity and curiosity, Dance Exchange expands who gets to dance, where dance happens, w Where is the dance happening? What is it about?

Dance Exchange is a Takoma Park, MD-based non-profit arts organization committed to unearthing and exploring the questions at the center of our lives, using dancemaking and creative practices that engage individuals and communities of all ages. Celebrating 20 years in our home in Takoma Park, MD and Montgomery County in 2017-18! Founded in 1976 by Liz Lerman and under the artistic direction of Cas

sie Meador since 2011, Dance Exchange creates dances by asking four questions: Who gets to dance? Why does it matter? We are an intergenerational company of artists that creates dance and engages people in making art. We serve as an incubator for creative research, bringing ideas to action through collaborations that range from experts in the field of dance to unexpected movers and makers. Through these exchanges we stretch the boundaries between the studio, stage, and other environments to make dances that are rooted in the particularity of people and place. Through local, national, international, and online projects we gather and create community to contribute to a healthy and more sustainable environment. Recent and current projects include explorations of human rights, nuclear physics, ecology, human-environmental interactions, and the advancement of racial equity.

✨ Co|Lab 2026 at Dance Exchange
April 4 – May 15, 2026 | Ages 18+ | No prior dance experience needed

What does it mean to build sanctuary together?

Co|Lab is Dance Exchange’s Community Choreography Laboratory—a creative process where artists and community members gather to explore collaborative dance-making through embodied practice, dialogue, and reflection. Over six weeks, participants work together to create an original performance while building relationships and exploring questions of identity, care, and community.

This year’s Co|Lab will be guided by a guest choreographer whose movement practice blends hip hop, contemporary, house, and somatic storytelling. Together we will create “Sanctuary: An Ecosystem of Love and Care,” a performance that explores how collective presence transforms space into refuge—where every voice, body, and offering matters.

🌿 No dance experience required
🌿 Sliding scale tuition ($250–$400)
🌿 Scholarships and work-study opportunities available

🗓 Rehearsals: Saturdays beginning April 4
🎭 Final Performance: May 15 at 7:30 pm
(Kick-off of the Dance On Gathering + SPARK event)

If you are curious about movement, community, and creative inquiry, this space is for you.

On this , we honor a true legend — Judith Bauer, who turns 90 this month and continues to inspire with every step.
She’s still creating, still leading, and still reminding us of the power of movement. Her latest choreographic project with co-lead Corina Iona Dalzell, Ordinary Acts of Resistance, premieres Friday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. at Dance Exchange as the culmination of our annual Co|Lab program. It is a powerful, intergenerational collaboration that brings together stories and movements from our community of resistance and renewal.
Here’s to a teacher who proves that passion has no age limit and that dance is forever. Thank you, Judith, for showing us how to lead with courage, grace, and relentless creativity. ❤️
