Atlatl?
It's an aztec (Nahua) word which translates to "water thrower". But this hunting tool was used all over the world not just southern Mexico who's people name for the tool became the popular one. It is a spear throwing system to allow more leverage for more force, distance and impact imparted to a thrown spear ( or dart) . It's name atlatl meaning "water thrower" comes from its use as a common spearfishing or waterfowl hunting implement. Among the many cultures who uses them us Cherokee people have had it among our weapons and tools for generations. Launching points into everything from mastodon to garfish.
