We've been brave this season.
Wagner's Das Rheingold, the first ever in Tacoma's history. Gluck's Orfeo, our first LGBTQ+ characters on stage in 60 years. And coming next season, Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, reimagined through the lens of the Harlem Renaissance, with an international cast of principal singers drawn from the African American community.
Letters of thanks have poured in from the community. Some pushback has come too, and we're proud of that. Bigger stories ask more of all of us, and we'll keep telling them.
Why our work matters here:
~13.5% of Tacoma lives in poverty, 44% higher than Seattle.
~60% of TPS students rely on free or reduced lunch.
Only 37% of adults here hold a bachelor's degree, about half the rate of Seattle and Bellevue.
That's why we do what we do. Greater access to art, education, and representation is needed and deserved. Tacoma Opera offers 1,000+ free tickets a year, community workshops, public lectures, and children's events, plus thrilling, world-class opera right here at home.
We're proud to call Grit City home. It's a working-class community full of art lovers, deep thinkers, and big dreamers, and we're here to make sure every one of them has a seat at the opera.
We need your help now to keep moving forward with courage.
The Big Give is May 5. I'm asking you to consider giving to Tacoma Opera now and throughout the week leading up to it.
You don't have to live here in Tacoma to help us with the great work we do, but if you believe in our mission, even the smallest donation helps make a big difference. Finally, consider donating in the name of someone who inspired you to be courageous, and we will add their name to our programs this season (see the donation link for details).
Every dollar fuels our work.
Thank you.
