Just like on Earth life was single cellular for the first 3 billion years, then around 500 million years later multicellular organisms started to appear. After another 500 million years animals started to get more complex, forming the first macro predators. Thus an arms race to form eyes, teeth, and shells to better see and detect predators or prey.
