Are earning something and deserving something mutually exclusive?

This idea has been tossing around in my brain for a while and came back to the forefront during tonight's WWE Monday Night RAW when Chad Gable was pushing back on the WWE fans chanting "You Deserve This" after his win at WWE SummerSlam this past weekend.

I can understand what he's getting at and where he's coming from, but I don't agree that the two concepts are mutually exclusive.
