Traditional printmakers create custom matrices for each new print, whereas John Thompson ‘72 re-uses existing matrices as building blocks, recombining and reimagining them across different compositions.

This practice inspired the title for our latest exhibition at the Bernard and Louise Palitz Gallery, John Thompson ‘72: Infinite Variation, on view through September 29, 2026.

We have less than one week left in our campaign to conserve Ben Shahn’s “The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti” and a $5,000 matching gift from Stephen Vogel ‘71 is on the table to help us reach our goal! That means every gift up to $5,000 will be doubled, dollar for dollar.

When Ben Shahn was on campus to commemorate the mural’s installation he said, “The whole thing is like a dream… now I feel like a composer who composed a work 35 years ago. finally, he has heard it played by a superb orchestra…”

In these images, Ben Shahn is examining the mural with Virginia Denton ‘61, who would later go on to become the University’s Director of Design and Construction.

Join our campaign and help us reach our goal by May 31. Join our campaign to conserve Ben Shahn’s last major work, The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti. This monumental mural has been part of the Syracuse University campus since 1967 and we need your help to reach our $15,000 goal to start conservation efforts.

Inspired to preserve what he considers one of his favorite works of public art, Stephen Vogel, Class of 1971, is offering an exciting opportunity to support this important effort. To give more people time to be part of it, we’ve extended the campaign deadline to May 31! From this point forward, Mr. Vogel will match every new gift, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000.

We’re so close. Donate today:
