IPA Independent Potters Association

IPA Independent Potters Association We are a community-minded group of potters and ceramic artists! For the price of admission, guests will receive food, drinks and live music!

Our flagship event is Cups for a Cause, when we hold an event to raise money for a local concern. In September 2023, 100% of proceeds will go to InterFaith Works of Central New York (interfaithworkscny.org). For an additional donation, they may choose a set of cups or mugs as our gift of appreciation! Since our inception in 2012, we have raised a sum total of over $80,000 for a variety of charities.

The Independent Potters Association is proud to celebrate Jen Gandee! SUNY has recognized five Cayuga Community College faculty and staff members for their outstanding career contributions to Cayuga and its students by honoring them with the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. We are honored to spread the news that Jen has received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching. Below is the announcement from Cayuga Community College's Website.

"Jennifer Gandee — Adjunct Assistant Professor

For more than 20 years, Jennifer has dedicated herself to art, education, and encouraging her students to pursue their own creative instincts.

Jennifer started teaching at Cayuga in 1999, and has also taught at LeMoyne College and Syracuse University while continuing her own successful career as an artist. As an educator, Jennifer is known for her enthusiastic support for her students, her expertise in diverse artistic fields, and her encouragement of her students to find ways to give back to the community. In particular, her support for the Empty Bowls initiative has helped combat food insecurity in Cayuga County.

Jennifer has also enjoyed an extensive artistic career, with her work being exhibited at locations across the Northeast. She owns her own gallery, is a board member at the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, and has twice been named Cayuga’s Visiting Artist.

She earned her Master of Fine Arts in Material Studies from Syracuse University and her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art/Ceramics from West Virginia University."

Today we had a wonderful day of learning. Clayscapes Pottery lended their space so four IPA artists could present to area artists. Thank you to Karen Smith, Courtney Spencer Eppel, Lowell Hutcheson, and Tim See for sharing your expertise, talent, knowledge, and business skills with us.
-Karen demonstrated ow she constructs fantastical creatures helping us learn how to engineer sculptural characters.
-Courtney shared multi layered decorating techniques she uses on her functional pottery giving us a chance to learn how to apply slip trailing, underglaze and slip use as well as incised techniques.
-Lowell's demonstration gave us insight on adding textural slip laters of various clay bodies. She uses these to create surfaces influenced by archeology and natural surfaces.
-When you want to ship hundreds of ceramic works to clients, Tim See has the packaging down to a science. He shared all his recommended tools and supplies while demonstrating the exact packing techniques he uses.
Thank you to these presenters, Clayscapes, and IPA for educating the community. Keep an eye out for our future educational opportunities.
