Journal, create scrapbooks and send cards with handwritten notes

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) fitted 36 university students with high-density EEG caps — 256 electrodes per cap — and had them perform the same task twice: copy words on a screen, once by hand with a digital pen, once by typing. The difference in what happened in their brains was striking.

When students wrote by hand, widespread neural networks lit up across central and parietal regions. Memory formation, sensory processing, attention, and learning — all firing. When they typed those same words, those brain regions went almost completely silent. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, showed that handwriting creates rich, elaborate neural activity that typing simply doesn't trigger.

Lead researchers Audrey van der Meer and Ruud van der Weel point to the mechanics: the fine motor movements, the sensory feedback from the pen, the visual-motor coordination. Typing removes all of that. It's faster, but it's neurologically thinner.

This matters for classrooms. As schools rush toward tablets and laptops, this research offers a quiet counter-argument: preserving time for handwriting isn't nostalgia. It's neuroscience. In a world obsessed with digital speed, the pen may still be one of the most powerful tools we have for building stronger learners.
