THIS WEEK! Get ready for the PICS Arts Festival happening right on the Syracuse University Quad! We've been introducing you to some of our fantastic artists, and now you can finally check out our whole program of amazing folks presenting their pieces on "Moving Forward". We have live performances taking place from 3:30-6:30, a talkback artists at 7 PM, and video performances in Schine from 12-3PM and 8-9PM. With each performance lasting only 10 minutes, you'll have lots of time to see any number of projects as you'd like! We can't wait to see you join us on Thursday for some (or all) of these events!

Today we have one of our digital artists, Florencia Ulloa, and her film "Pink Glitter".

"Pink Glitter" is a DJ video performance and monologue that explores themes of womanhood, feminism, societal expectations of women, and gender violence through Kubler Ross's stages of grief. Florencia has mentioned that this performance has comes from her own experience as a survivor, and has found the experience writing the piece liberating and cathartic.

Florencia will be performing on the Syracuse University Quad on April 13th alongside many other fantastic artists. What performance are you most excited about?

Only 5 golden days until PICS 2023! Today we have an incredible group of students and faculty supervisors from Cornell presenting their piece, "E Train Express".

This performance class of latina women consider the concept of Moving forward as "Being able to move forward in the face of adversity". These passionate women include: Aileen M, Alexis Marquez, Ana Carmona-Perez, Juliette Wolpert, Lizbeth Ortiz, and Nina Borja. Their incredible supervisors are Debra Castillo, Juan Manuel Adalpe, and Carolina.

Aileem, Alexis, Ana, Juliette, Lizbeth, and Nina will be performing on the Syracuse University Quad on April 13th alongside many other fantastic artists. What performance are you most excited about?

PICS 2023 is only 6 days away! Today we have the team for "Debate Extremo", Jhon Lindarte, Ana Guerrero, and Giovanni Minicucci.

Jhon is the author of this piece, and is thrilled to collaborate with Ana and Giovanni on this play. This Spanish-Language play will be diving into themes of: "Policy; community, latinidad, dreams, and democracy."

Jhon, Ana, and Giovanni will be performing on the Syracuse University Quad on April 13th alongside many other fantastic artists. What performance are you most excited about?

PICS 2023 is only 7 days away! Today we have artist Mmakgosi Anita Tau tackling the previously undocumented narratives of African and African diasporic people with the piece "122 Rods".

Mmakgosi is a Motswana woman who is passionate about standing in solidarity with Black people living in America. She explains that "Black Feminist thought resists the function of feminist tenets developed from the experiences of white, middle-class, Westerners that exist as a template for the insertion of the ideas and experiences of African-American people. Minorities are most likely to be listened to only if we frame our ideas and experiences in the language that is familiar to and comfortable for a dominant group. I see my performance as a tool to acknowledging wrongs, correcting them and providing a space for reflecting on the power of remembrance as a channel to forge forward and repair the fabric of the American community."

Just 8 more days until PICS 2023! Today we have artists Tara Sandlin and Hannah Dale Scarborough featured with their piece "I Smiled As I Died/ Thy Name Shall Live".

Tara explains the inspiration of her piece comes from her religious background as she has "journeyed through various types of Christian churches, beginning my life in a very conservative one and landing in a very progressive one where I am now working toward becoming ordained--which would never have been allowed in my childhood congregation." Her project has become her way to explore the issues of violence to which children and gender minorities are often subjected to, in addition to "honing in on stories that demonstrate violence against young women but also articulate the importance of storytelling and community for healing."

Tara and Hannah will be performing on the Syracuse University Quad on April 13th alongside many other fantastic artists. What performance are you most excited about?

T-minus 9 days until PICS 2023! Today we have artist Mona Eikel-Pohen to introduce to you, and her piece titled "Before. During. Still During. Not Yet After."

Mona was inspired to present her anthology of poems by "The pandemic, the calendar, time, losses, and love lead to the publication of poetry in German, called "Sogar das Schweigen hat diakritische Zeichen oder Vom Lesen wird man nicht satt" (2023)". She hopes to connect with the passing of time and how we change with or without it.

Mona will be performing on the Syracuse University Quad on April 13th alongside many other fantastic artists. What performance are you most excited about?

PICS is only 10 days away! To begin our 10-day count down, we wanted to introduce you to our amazing artists.

First up is Celine Brad! They will be bringing a series of original songs to the festival that focuses on the obstacles that might be holding us back. She hopes that people will connect with the content, language, and themes and perhaps be inspired to begin their own journey towards moving forward, at whatever pace, and in whatever form that may take.
