Let’s hear from our outstanding cast! What does “Waiting for Lefty” mean to them?

Behind the Design of “Waiting for Lefty”

We asked scenic designer Dorothy Hoover about building the world of the play:

“Inspirations included the work of Russian avant-garde theater director Vsevolod Meyerhold, Russian Constructivism, and images of the Industrial Revolution. I also wanted to capture both unions discussed in the script, taxi drivers and zinc miners, and melded the two together to create the central tower, ramp, and floor design.”

“I’m working closely with lighting designer Bri Pattillo, and this synergy between lighting and scenic is really at the forefront of this design. I hope this collaboration will be a great teaching moment for student designers.”

Los Angeles Mission College will present “Waiting for Lefty: A Sylmar Sonata” as our Fall 2026 Theatre Arts production. This original expansion of Clifford Odets’ 1935 play will be presented in the LA Mission College AMP Theater from November 13-21, 2026. Tickets range from $10-25 and go on sale on October 5 through www.lamcstage.com.

When Clifford Odets’ “Waiting for Lefty” debuted, it pierced the heart of the capitalist greed that fueled the Great Depression, inspiring audiences into action. Seven scenes unfold, revealing the intersecting lives of working class characters and their experiences with exploitation, corruption, and social injustice. The LA Mission Theatre production takes this one step further, interlacing “Waiting for Lefty” with the screenplay of “Salt of the Earth,” the 1954 blacklisted film about a New Mexico mining strike, to create a contemporary tale of labor in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.

“Waiting for Lefty: A Sylmar Sonata” is directed by Brian Tichnell, with text from Odets, Michael Wilson, William Shakespeare, LA Mission student David Carrera, and the student company. Scenic design is by Dorothy Hoover, lighting design by Bri Pattillo, and costume design by student Julianne Sanchez.
