It is with heavy hearts that the Lassen County Arts Council extends our deepest condolences to the LaMarr family on the passing of Jean.

Jean was an extraordinarily talented artist whose creativity, passion, and generosity enriched our community in countless ways. While she will be deeply missed, her legacy will live on through the beautiful works of art she created and the lives she touched along the way.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. 💜

On behalf of her family, we are saddened to share that artist Jean Lamarr (Northern Paiute/Pit River) passed away on August 1, 2026, at her home in Susanville, California.

Jean LaMarr was an extraordinary artist, educator, and advocate whose work transformed the landscape of contemporary Indigenous art. Through her paintings, prints, murals, and installations, Jean challenged stereotypes, celebrated Native American identity, and reminded us that Indigenous cultures are vibrant, living, and evolving. Her art was both beautiful and fearless, inviting viewers to see history, community, and resilience through a new lens. Jean’s legacy will continue to inspire artists, students, and all who believe in the power of art to tell the truth, foster understanding, and create change.

Jean, thank you for your vision, your courage, and the stories you shared. Your voice and your art will continue to inspire generations to come.

We will share more information about ways to honor and support Jean LaMarr's legacy as it becomes available.
