You can have beautiful color and lovely brushwork — and still end up with a painting that just doesn't have any punch.

Very often, the problem isn't color. It's value. The lights aren't light enough. The darks aren't dark enough. And without that contrast, everything settles into the middle and the painting loses its depth.

That's what Lionel Sanchez's Light & Shadow workshop is designed to tackle.

On October 15, Lionel will help you learn to see those value relationships more clearly — where the light is coming from, what happens when it hits an object, how shadows describe form, and how stronger value choices can turn a flat painting into one with real dimension.

And these aren't skills that apply to one particular project. They'll make you a better painter, period.

On November 8, we're kicking off our Village Art Workshops Holiday Festival with this wonderfully over-the-top Holiday Acrylic Flamingo.

This is meant to be FUN. We'll paint it together step by step, so you don't need to be an experienced acrylic painter to join us.

You'll work with bright color, simple shapes and layering while creating a holiday painting that is definitely not going to be mistaken for something you bought at Hobby Lobby. And the best part? All supplies are included!

One week from tomorrow, Janet Rogers will be painting with us at Village Art Workshops. 🌸

And if you've been watching this workshop and thinking "maybe", this is the post where I'm going to tell you:

It's time to decide.

Janet is coming October 12–13 for two full days devoted to the kind of watercolor so many painters want to achieve — loose, fresh, expressive and filled with light.

We'll have fresh flowers right in the studio, and Janet will show you how she looks at them and decides what matters — and what can simply disappear.

You'll work with:

• Fresh, lively color
• Loose and confident brushwork
• Lost and found edges
• Simplified shapes
• Light and value
• And that sometimes-difficult skill of knowing when to stop

This isn't about copying every petal. It's about learning to make choices that let watercolor actually look like watercolor.

🎨 What makes a watercolor feel like it's filled with light?

It isn't just leaving the white paper white.

It's understanding where the light is coming from, what it touches, what it leaves in shadow—and how those relationships create depth and atmosphere.

That's one of the things Lynn Ferris does so beautifully, and more importantly, teaches so well.

Lynn returns to Village Art Workshops November 16–17 for two days devoted to watercolor and the study of light. Rather than simply copying a reference, you'll learn to look more carefully at what light and shadow are actually doing—and use that understanding to make your own paintings stronger.

Janet will be at Village Art Workshops October 12–13, and we're getting close.

For two days, fresh flowers become the starting point as Janet shows you how to move beyond carefully copying every petal and leaf and instead paint with more freedom, spontaneity and expression.

Through demonstrations, painting exercises and individual instruction, you'll work on capturing the feeling, rhythm and beauty of your floral subjects—with the loose, fluid watercolor and joyful color Janet is known for.

🎨 Want to paint outdoors—but have absolutely no idea where to start?

Painting en plein air sounds wonderfully romantic until you're standing outside wondering: What do I paint? Where do I set up? How do I turn all of THIS into a painting?

That's exactly what Lionel Sanchez's Introduction to En Plein Air workshop is designed to help with.

Over a day and a half, Lionel will take some of the mystery out of painting outdoors and help you learn how to choose a subject, simplify what you're seeing, establish a composition, and capture the essentials of a scene without trying to paint every single thing in front of you.

And here's the nice part: you can work in the medium you're already comfortable with. Watercolor, acrylic, oil—bring your medium and learn the plein air part.

And there's a reason for that.

Lynn doesn't reveal her reference images until the workshop begins. So when you sign up, you're not choosing a workshop because you want to copy a particular pretty painting.

You're choosing the teacher.

And we can show you what Lynn's students have done at Village Art Workshops.

These are real students from previous Lynn Ferris workshops—and yes, those are their paintings.

Over two days, Lynn teaches you to really look at light and shadow and understand how they create form, depth and atmosphere in a watercolor. You'll complete two paintings, but what you take home is much more useful than two finished projects: skills you can apply to the paintings you create afterward.

Our Village Art Workshops Holiday Festival is coming November 8–12, and we've put together several days of shorter workshops and full-day painting designed for one thing:

Come in. Make art. Have fun.

You can paint a wonderfully Florida Acrylic Flamingo, play with brilliant Alcohol Inks, create Watercolor Batik Cards, or spend two days with me painting with Watercolor & Drizzle.

And because several of the Festival classes are offered in shorter sessions, you don't have to commit to a whole day to come play.

Same pear. Same lesson. Eight different paintings. 🍐

And that's one of my favorite things about teaching art.

We can all start with the same subject, hear the same demonstration and use the same basic techniques — and somehow, by the end of the day, nobody's painting looks exactly like anybody else's.

That's the way it's supposed to be.

There's a lot of learning that happens around these tables at Village Art Workshops.

There's also a lot of laughing, comparing notes, borrowing something from the person next to you, wandering over to see what somebody else is doing and occasionally asking, “Wait...how did YOU do that?”

That's life at VAW.

You do NOT have to be good at watercolor to come to Watercolor Boot Camp.

Actually, if you already had the whole darn thing figured out, there wouldn't be much point. 😁

Watercolor Boot Camp starts one week from tomorrow, and this three-day workshop is for painters who want to understand their materials better and feel more confident making decisions on their own.

Maybe you're brand new.

Maybe you've taken some classes and can follow along just fine — but aren't quite sure what to do when you're painting by yourself.

Or maybe you've been painting for years and there are still a few things watercolor does that make you say, “Why in the world did THAT happen?”

You're all welcome.

We'll spend three days painting, experimenting and practicing the fundamentals — water control, washes, values, edges, color mixing and brushwork — while using projects and exercises designed to make those ideas actually stick.

There will be demonstrations. There will be practice. There will undoubtedly be some watercolor doing something we didn't ask it to do.

That's why we're having Boot Camp.
