Well its time to make it officially official. JoJo ( Shakin Not Spurred) will be coming home to Heart S Performance Horses! She had a great home with McKenzie but sustained a leg injury and will never be performance sound. Which means she's going to be making some amazing babies for me (and McKenzie). She will be bred to Famous Sierra this year for a 2027 foal and I can not wait for this cross! Welcome home JoJo!❤️

Trust the process!

I love seeing this sport of barrel racing grow and teaching the next generation of horseman. I get a lot of beginner and young kids in to start learning to ride and learn how to barrel race and all to often they will come for a few months and the kid starts to improve and then they want to start competing or they think they are ready to move up to a faster horse. Then, against my advice, they buy the horse I tell them not to. The problems start to come and then its the horses fault, the kids confidence is shaken and parents are mad.
It takes YEARS for kids to become good at sports and equine sports is no different. Kids play little league, middle school, High school and then MAYBE go on to play college and HOPEFULLLY in the big leagues. So why do parents think a couple of months or heck even a year means their kid should be winning big checks and dominating in rodeo? I see it all to often where the kids stop enjoying it because the parents expect a pay out and to "make their money back" and that is a LOT of pressure on a kid. And a lot of times that child still has a lot to learn. But you get a trophy and a pat on the back for winning a champion baseball game in High School and you put the money out for that too. So why are we expecting the kids to be making that money back when they've only had a few months to a year under their belt of riding? I get it, its expensive and time consuming. I've literally been riding my whole life as I was lucky and had parents who rode. But they also knew where their limits where and I decided I wanted to learn more and be better.
So I went and cleaned stalls for free for lessons. I cleaned tack, scrubbed water buckets, watched others get lessons when I couldn't afford it. When others where at the pool in the summer, my parents were dropping my off at a trainers house so I could be hands on every day. I think a lot of parents are taking a valuable teaching moment away from kids these days. Letting kids build that sweat equity not only helps them learn what it truly takes to care for these animals but also gives them a sense of pride in what they are accomplishing. And I can tell you the doors that opened for me because I was willing to work for the knowledge and even for free for those breeders and trainers opened up even more doors down the road for me.
My big ask for these parents is don't be afraid to lose some money those first year or two because those are the foundation years for your kid. Its hard, but if your kid wants it they will find a way I promise and a good trainer will help along the way. Don't be afraid to see them fall because as a trainer, my favorite part is watching them get up and push through even harder to reach their goals.
