The Sullivan Civic Center project at the site where Central Elementary School was demolished summer of 2013 will continue with the creation of an all-purpose community center in the former school gymnasium which will host events like farmer's markets, weddings, receptions, reunions, live entertainment, and the like. Funding will come from a variety of sources from the Cumulative Capital Developmen
t funds, Riverboat Sharing, EDIT, rental revenue, private corporations, and individual donations. "The City government can't do it on its own," Mayor Lamb told the Sullivan Daily Times. To that end, Lamb and his staff submitted a grant to Indiana-American Water to purchase mature trees to plant at the park. This City was awarded a $3,500 grant to do just that, the highest amount awarded in the state. Why Sullivan Central Plaza? The investment immediately starts increasing Sullivan's Assessed Valuation, which in 2007 was $89,000,000 and has dropped today to a staggering $63,000,000. That is a $26 million dollar drop in taxable parcels which fund Police and Fire among other City services. The City of Sullivan cannot afford that trend to continue. The Economic Impact of bringing people to our community has been demonstrated by the annual Sullivan County Corn Festival, C**n Hunters events, Sullivan May Days, and the Sullivan County Park and Lake. These are just four examples of what brings dollars into Sullivan. When people attend events at Sullivan Central Plaza we must market our downtown and local merchants- The Newstand, Brown Jewelers, Uptown Deli, Schulze Insurance, Goodie House, Coffee Cabin, Sun Tropics, Mimi's Bakery, Milburn's Pharmacy, Sullivan Furniture, and many others that have invested in downtown. When local business succeeds, growth occurs, creating more jobs. The City needs to support them and invest ourselves. If Central Plaza does not increase property values (which is nearly impossible), does not attract future investment (which is already happening, stay tuned), and doesn't replenish activity (which it already is; e.g. Flag Football Superbowl, FCC Community Block Party, Crossroads Family Movie Night)-at the very minimum we can increase the Quality of Life for the citizens who currently live here. Give the great folks of Sullivan something we can all be proud of and rekindle our love for Sullivan. Sullivan Central Plaza: "It All Starts Here."
