The Silence That Follows the Fair
Sunday begins like every other day of the fair.
Exhibitors arrive early to feed and care for their animals. The grounds are peaceful and quiet before the day begins—some of the most special hours of fair week.
Then the fairgrounds slowly come to life. Families arrive, the rides begin their familiar clinking and clanking, and the air fills with music, laughter and sounds from the grandstands.
For a while, Sunday feels like every other fair day.
But then 4:00 arrives, and the exhibits begin to leave. Animals are loaded, projects are gathered and families start saying goodbye. The barns slowly empty, the rides stop turning and the midway begins to shut down.
By 6:30 or 7:00, you can stand at one end of the fairgrounds and look all the way to the other without seeing the sea of people that filled it only hours earlier.
After months of preparation and five days filled with animals, exhibits, rides, music, laughter and memories, everything suddenly becomes still.
Then comes the silence that follows the fair.
It isn’t simply quiet. It’s the absence of all the people and sounds that brought these grounds to life. It’s exhaustion, relief, pride, sadness and overwhelming gratitude all tangled together.
So, as the 2026 Door County Fair comes to a close, we simply want to say thank you.
Thank you to the exhibitors who spent months preparing their animals and projects.
Thank you to the parents, grandparents, leaders and families who supported them every step of the way.
Thank you to our volunteers, workers, superintendents, judges and board members who gave their time, energy and talents.
Thank you to our sponsors, vendors, entertainers and community partners who helped make this week possible.
And thank you to every person who walked through our gates, cheered from the grandstands, rode the rides, visited the exhibits and made memories with us.
For five unforgettable days, this little piece of Door County was alive with something truly special.
You created the laughter, the excitement, the traditions and the memories. You are what makes the Door County Fair so much more than an event.
You are what makes it ours.
