Nature’s Rivalry

A week ago, I shared a look at this painting while it was still on the easel. Now the piece is finished, and you really feel the dramatic energy and excitement of the moment. A bald eagle and osprey crossed paths for only a few seconds, but the movement and rivalry of that encounter stayed with me long after I saw it.

Searching for the rare Ivory Gull amongst the hundreds and hundreds of Glaucous Gulls ( AKA Sea Gulls) at the Homer Spit in Homer Alaska, this rare high arctic bird was spotted here far from its normal range it is a small white bird slightly larger than a crow ,known for traveling with polar bears and trying to eat some of their leftover catch

Paddle boarding at dusk, I watched this happen right in front of me.

The osprey had just caught a fish when a bald eagle came in and stole it almost instantly. Moments like that stay with you. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at a new painting inspired by that encounter. I love the constant push and pull of detail, building layers of paint bit by bit.
