Join us July 23 at 2pm and 7pm for the premiere of “Just(ice) Like Waters”, a thrilling adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. This production is in partnership with and sponsored by . Black Shakespeare Project recreates The Tempest through the lens of Transformational Justice.

“How do we seek justice for ourselves and heal after harm? What is life ‘after oppression’? How do we decolonize?Through the specified and acute lens of our Blackness and intersectional identities, we examine the dynamics of power, greed, enslavement, and recovery often untended to in this text."

Hey soul fam,

New Years vibrations on high! We hope this update finds you in warmth and blessings. We are excited to share that Black Shakespeare Project will be represented at the 2021 Shakespeare Theatre Association Virtual Conference.

Accessibility has been and remains one of the founding pillars of our company. For centuries, Black folk have been shut up and shut out from access to classical training, education, performance, and development opportunities in a predominantly white run industry. For us, it is imperative that spaces like this are accessible for any Black folk who would like to be in attendance.

For Black educators, current or future artistic leaders, and classical revolutionary minds that desire to be in attendance - we have a free full entry access code for the conference that we'd be delighted to share with you. For the code, message us here or shoot an email to [email protected]

Until very Soon,

Black Shakespeare Project

A letter from the team:

Greetings everybody!

We want to take a moment to thank everyone who reached out to us these past weeks with love, affirmation, and curiosity about our Breathe My Soul Black Shakespeare Laboratory. We’ve received interest forms from all sorts of folk and we are deeply moved by the enthusiasm for this space.

At Black Shakespeare Project, we have a mission to cultivate Safe, Open, and Strongly held space for Black folk to engage with Shakespeare’s poetry. In that, we’ve been staying alert to updates from public health professionals in regards to that nasty Rona, Covid-19. After much elaboration, we have collectively decided to join institutions all over in taking preventative measures by suspending all face-to-face programming. There will be no breathing of souls in group settings on our watch until further notice.

In this time, we cannot help but notice the parallels at play between the modern and the classical. When theaters closed up due to the plague at the end of the sixteenth century, Shakespeare was keeping it moving, writing some of his richest poetic texts — So, we’re going to do the same. We're going to keep it moving. We’ll be taking this time to continue developing our initiatives, engaging with folk through social media, creating content, and creating joy.

We are so eager to get up on our feet and vibrate text together. For now, let's do what we can to protect ourselves and those around us. Read some poetry. Write some poetry. Feel your feet rooted into the earth. Let your brave belly go. Feel your breath. Breathe your soul. Generally, take care.

Love and light to all!

Until soon,

The Team at Black Shakespeare Project.

About —

Black Shakespeare Project was founded in 2019 during Black History Month with a mission to address the insufficiency of space held by and for Black bodies and voices in Shakespeare performance and training. Likewise, Black Shakespeare Project exists to examine the reverently intertwined relationship between Black identity and Shakespeare's poetry. We believe that Shakespeare's language was written to be a full Body/Mind experience and, in our workshops and artistic endeavors, We explore the depths of this poetry within Ourselves.
