Westport Community Theatre (WCT), now in its 67th year, will present โ€œPride and Prejudiceโ€ January 31 through February 16.

Based on Jane Austenโ€™s classic 1813 novel about love, marriage and social status, this stage adaptation by acclaimed director Jon Jory brings all the wit and romance of Austenโ€™s story to the stage in a refreshingly fast-paced and engaging manner.

Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennetโ€™s most urgent priority, but with four sisters, an overzealous match-making mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, itโ€™s difficult to escape the subject. When the independent-minded Elizabeth meets the handsome but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, she is determined not to let her feelings triumph over her own good sense - but the truth turns out to be slipperier than it seems. The San Francisco Chronicle hails Joryโ€™s adaptation as โ€œexceptionally clear, funny and moving.โ€

The Westport production is helmed by veteran director and actor Mark Frattaroli (Stratford) and features a talented cast of area performers. The cast includes Lynnette Victoria (Bridgeport); Henry Durham, Isla Hood, Sawyer Peduto and Erin Wallace (Fairfield); Patrick Spaulding (New Fairfield); Tony Moreno (Newtown); Lucy Babbitt, Margaret Frattaroli and Brodey Ott (Stratford); Dana Chiapparelli (Westport); and John Bachelder (Woodbridge). New York actors include Skyler Forrester Brown (New York City) and Deborah Carlson (Waccabuc). Ms. Carlson appears in the production courtesy of Actorsโ€™ Equity Association.

โ€œPride and Prejudiceโ€ plays weekends January 31 through February 16. Performances take place at Westport Community Theatre, located in the lower level of Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Avenue, in Westport, CT. Curtain time is 7:30 PM on Friday and Saturday and 2 PM on Sunday. An additional performance is offered on Thursday, February 6 at 7:30 PM. All tickets are $30; group rates are available.

The Square One Theatre Company, Stratfordโ€™s resident full-time producing theatre since 1990, will close its doors in 2025. Making the announcement Artistic Director Tom Holehan cited the recent passing of his husband and Square One General Manager Richard Pheneger as the primary reason for closing at this time.

The Square One Theatre Company was founded in 1990 by Holehan, a longtime Stratford resident and Executive Producer Barbara Cairney of Milford. Employed by the Stratford Library, Holehan had begun a theatre program of staged theatre readings there in 1985. With Cairney and Pheneger, they recognized an opportunity to create a new professional theatre in Stratford Center when the townโ€™s former movie house was bought and renovated as a legitimate theatre. The theatre company remained in the Center for 25 seasons before moving to their current venue at Stratford Academy where they transformed the schoolโ€™s auditorium stage into an intimate black box theatre.

โ€œWe have been very fortunate all these years to have the support of the Stratford communityโ€, Holehan said. โ€œThe Town, the Stratford Recreation Department, Stratford Academy and, of course, our loyal subscribers and donors, have been the reasons weโ€™ve been successful for 35 years. I also must credit our invaluable Friends of Square One Theatre volunteers and current President Carole Fanslow, who have been with us since the very first season and contribute four scholarships annually in the theatreโ€™s name to area high school students.โ€

Although the mainstage theatre will be closing, Square One will continue to sponsor its annual Readers Theatre Summer Showcase at the Stratford Library where live staged readings of plays have taken place since 1985. Donations to the Library in honor of Richard Pheneger will help to fund these and other arts-related events at the Library. The theatre will also continue its relationship with its sister theatre, the Westport Community Theatre, where Square One restaged their critically acclaimed production of โ€œChapattiโ€ last spring and will produce their hit revival of โ€œAgnes of Godโ€ there in March. Tickets can be ordered by visiting: www.westportcommunitytheatre.com.

โ€œI am very proud of our track record in Stratfordโ€, concluded Holehan who directed all 100+ productions at Square One, โ€œIt is bittersweet, of course, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity afforded the theatre in this wonderful community.โ€

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of RIchard P. Pheneger, General Manager and Publicity Director of Square One Theatre and treasured husband of Square One Artistic Director Tom Holehan. His warm, welcoming manner and profound passion for the arts will be missed by all who knew him.
--------------------------------------------
Richard P. Pheneger, 85, of Stratford Connecticut, beloved husband of Tom Holehan, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024.

He was born in Granville, Ohio the son of Herman and Theresa Pheneger. He graduated from Denison University and taught English, Radio & Television at Miami of Ohio and then Iowa State.

In the late 1970s he moved to Stratford where he was appointed Director of Public Relations & Marketing for the American Shakespeare Theatre. His years at the late theatre were most rewarding working with such acclaimed talents as Lynn Redgrave, Christopher Plummer and James Earl Jones among many others.

In the mid-1980s he accepted a position at the Stamford Center for the Arts where he headed Marketing and Press for many years before retiring in 1995. He was the General Manager/Publicity Director of Stratford's Square One Theatre Company since 1990.

He is survived by his husband of 47 years, Tom Holehan, as well as a brother Don Pheneger, cousins Susan Hand and Molly Roberts and nephews, Don and Doug Pheneger. The Holehan family also considered Richard a brother and much-loved member of their family.
