You don't realize all the stuff you do in life. I was recently watching PBS Passport and some NYC-Arts episodes. They were talking about the Art Students League and also Society of Illustrators. ASL had a sketch "class" on Saturday mornings. I say class in quotes because there was no instructor. Was great. You just went there, paid the fee (was around $10 for the session) and set up your easel for drawing, painting, pastels, whatever your medium of choice, and then got to work. You'd often be working next to famous, very successful artists. I did that! It was worth getting up early to get the subway into Manhattan. Afterwards, before going back to Queens I'd stop at a bakery on 6th Ave. where they sold delicious cornbread with corn kernels and/or hot pepper pieces baked in. Then there was the Society of Illustrators. They had a model one night each week in their studio on the top floor of their permanent location. I think it was on Monday nights. A friend of mine, Liz Bailey and I would meet there to draw. They kind of discouraged painting in those sessions since it would get messy and the sessions were very crowded. The good thing about going there was that they always had a theme, along with appropriate music and sometimes a jazz musician. On the break, you could go down to the bar for a drink which was normally restricted to members which of course we were not. So it was a big deal to be drinking there. But here again it was an opportunity to share and discuss your work with some of NY's top illustrators. Life is good. As I said, you really don't realize all that you do in the time that you've got. Life truly is what's happening when you're planning for the next big thing which may or may not come along.
