Bridgeport, Connecticut. Not the first city people name when they talk about the diaspora, and one of the ones that shaped it most. 🇵🇷

Boricuas came to Bridgeport for the same reason they came to so many northern cities, the factories. This was a manufacturing town, brass and machine works and mu*****ns, and it needed hands. Puerto Rican families settled on the East Side and the South End, and they arrived into cold winters, cold landlords, and jobs that used people up. They stayed anyway. They opened bodegas. They built churches. They raised kids who are now raising kids there.

Then the factories closed, the way factories did everywhere in that belt, and the community had to survive the thing it had come for disappearing. It did. Today Bridgeport has one of the largest Puerto Rican communities in Connecticut, with a Puerto Rican Day parade, a Boricua political presence, and a whole generation of Bridgeport Ricans who will tell you exactly which pueblo their family is from even if they have never lived there. ❄️

That is the diaspora in one city. We went where the work was, and then we made a home out of it. What city did your family land in, and are they still there?
