We at the New Revival Coffeehouse were saddened to learn that the wonderful songwriter, singer, and guitarist Bob Franke passed away earlier this month.

My name is Janet, and I’d like to share my own personal story about why I feel this loss so deeply.

Long before I was involved with the coffeehouse or even attended First Parish Church of Stow & Acton, I saw a flyer for a nearby Bob Franke concert. I was excited - I recognized his name because The Short Sisters had recorded the achingly beautiful Christmas song “Straw Against the Chill” and added their stunning three-part harmony. It was so beautiful that I had to know who wrote it.

That led me to become familiar with Bob’s songs.

And that, in turn, led me to my first New Revival Coffeehouse concert. I got to say hello to him and buy his CD. The following summer, I took his songwriting course. I became his Facebook friend and continued to listen to his exceptionally beautiful songs.

So it hit me hard when I read the news of his passing. I wanted to write this tribute to a kind man who offered us such beautiful folk songs.

I’ll leave you with one of our favorite songs of his (and I encourage you to discover more if you’re new to his music - “Still Small Voice” is another of our many favorites).

The song is called "For Real," and the chorus goes like this:

And there’s too much darkness in an endless night
To be afraid of the way we feel
Let’s be kind to each other
Not forever but for real

Thanks for the music, Bob. ❤️
