This children's sugar treat started as a royal spectacle built to impress a 16th-century French king.

This children's treat started as a royal spectacle for a French king. 👑🍬 Pupi di zucchero, brightly painted sugar dolls shaped like Opera dei Pupi knights and dancers, are one of the centerpiece treats of Sicily's Festa dei Morti every November 2nd, when children traditionally wake to find sweets and small gifts believed to be left by deceased relatives overnight.

The tradition traces back further than the holiday itself. Sicilian sugar artisans, working from Palermo, one of the era's major sugar-exporting centers, created elaborate sculpted sugar displays to honor King Henry III of France during his visit to Venice in 1574, showcasing both the sugar itself and the skill required to shape it. That same sculptural technique was eventually adapted into the smaller, folkloric figures still made across Sicily today, connecting a children's autumn tradition directly back to a 16th-century royal spectacle.
