A major Gianni Versace retrospective has opened at the Musée Maillol in Paris, arriving just weeks before the 30th anniversary of the designer's death in July 1997.

The exhibition presents nearly 450 pieces: original runway silhouettes, accessories, sketches, decorative objects, and photographs by Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchelier, and Mario Testino. It covers the full arc of Versace's career, from his early work in the late 1970s through the bold, body-conscious designs that defined the 1980s and 1990s. The show also includes rare video footage and interviews. According to the organizers, it is the largest French retrospective dedicated to Versace since 1986.

For Versace himself, Paris was never just a stop on the fashion calendar. It was where he wanted to be seen. He showed at Paris Fashion Week, dressed its celebrities, and saw the city as the only stage that truly mattered. The retrospective lands at a loaded moment for the brand: Versace was acquired by the Prada group in late 2025, and a new artistic director was appointed in early 2026. Whether by coincidence or design, looking back at the founder right now carries a different kind of weight.

The exhibition runs through September 6, 2026, at the Musée Maillol, 59-61 rue de Grenelle in the 7th arrondissement. Open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with late-night hours on Thursdays until 10:00 p.m.
