Deed 3: The Puncture

When Spee came to the United States in the early 2000s, he quickly formed a wide and diverse circle of friends—ranging from street youths to attorneys, doctors, music producers, and many others. He spent time with them traveling and visiting places such as Kings Beach in Tahoe, Santa Cruz, and Sonoma Valley.
After one such period of travel, Spee returned home and sat along Ocean Street in Santa Cruz, overlooking the Boardwalk and the Pacific Ocean. There, he took up his brush and began to paint. He titled the work The Puncture.
When I, Aloysius, asked him what inspired the painting, he explained that it was his insight into American society. He described it as a portrayal of a population burdened by stress—overwhelmed by bills, commitments, and constant anticipation of what the next hour, day, or year might bring. He laughed and said, “It’s just too much.”
He went on to explain that when ordinary people speak about how difficult it is to push forward, they are not alone in this struggle. Even those in white-collar professions—doctors, attorneys, music producers, and others—often describe how fragile and demanding life feels. “You have to stay focused,” he said. “You have to keep pushing.”
Spee observed that the level of stress he encountered in American society felt more intense than what he had experienced in the African communities he came from or had visited and his travels across Europe.
As he continued to observe the country, he began questioning the legal system—watching the news, studying laws, and reflecting on their implications. He laughed again and remarked that the laws were becoming increasingly controversial, filled with loopholes and inconsistencies.
He then made a striking observation:
“When one of these strong young boys growing up decides to take this country into his hands, people will suffer to take it back from him. He will make sure to use the loopholes and controversial laws to his advantage, and people will feel the pressure before they realize they must act. Only then will they move to close the loopholes that exist in the law and in the laws being passed going forward. By then, a valuable lesson will have been learned.”

Deed 1: Saga of the African Secret Society

It is about the African norms and traditions/religion, as it stays static day after day, time passing while other cultures evolve. Our norms and traditions stay static and are never revisited. People don’t want to revisit them, probably because of greed, attachments, superiority, and much more.

The men get into little traditional houses for traditional purposes, and they forbid the women from getting in. They eat fine beef, drink fine liquor, and much more, but they separate themselves from the women. If you look closely at what they feast on, it’s superior to what the women eat and feast on. It’s said that the women should bow down to them when they pass or when they talk. Time changes while the women are evolving; the men never revisit those rules to change them to accommodate the needs of the changing times.

The same thing is seen in the African religion and tradition, as we might say the divinations and conditions have never been revisited to make accommodations for the changing times. Other religions come, and they seem to triumph over the African religion because it has never been worked on to make sure it accommodates the needs of the modern times. Generations after generations come and go by, but it stays the same, and the rules and conditions are never changed.

Spee said, “It will be important if the men get into a dialogue with the women as to how the tradition should look going forward in modern times. Because generations come and go, and the needs of the generations vary, they are not the same. Making changes to something doesn’t mean you have to change the footprint. This is because it has a link to your ancestors, who they are, what they stand for, their beliefs, and knowledge about certain things, especially their worships, divinations, and much more.”

DEEDS FROM OUR FATHER BY NZANTE SPEE
is an insight into what his paintings really mean he called them “Deeds From Our Father.” In his words he said “I don’t know if people understand what these are. When they come and buy these colors and brush strokes that I put together trying to convey a message from our father to us.”
Well, we all are going to have the opportunity to get an insight into his mind. How he saw the world and what he thought or knew was the right thing from our creator to do.
As seen in his works;

-Qui Est Le Maître painted in the late 80’s which portrays - humility = knowledge and power.

-Saga of the African Secret Society painted in the mid 90’s which depicts the static nature of the norms and values of African tradition/Religion.

-The Puncture painted in the 2000s in United States in California in Santa Cruz on Ocean street overlooking the Boardwalk on the Pacific Ocean as he looked critically into the American society with all its shortcomings. The stress in people’s minds and the way the laws were becoming more controversial…
During his last days on earth.
