The word I keep returning to when I think about Safoura Haghighi and her work is edifying.

Over the past several weeks, Safoura has guided us through five paintings and the ideas held within them—possibility, ego, cultivation, hidden meaning and freedom.

This film is my personal reflection on the artist, the work and the sense of discovery this series has given me. Safoura creates paintings of extraordinary beauty, but she also leaves us with something meaningful to consider about ourselves and the world around us.

From the first measured lines to the final touches of gold.
In works by Safoura Haghighi , beauty is built slowly—through precision, patience and countless decisions made by hand.
This video offers a glimpse into the creation of tazhib, the Persian art of illumination. An intricate design gradually emerges through delicate drawing, richly layered colour and luminous gold, transforming the page into something almost jewel-like.
The finished work may appear effortless, but every detail carries the evidence of time, discipline and devotion.

At first glance, Bird of Paradise appears to be an exquisite arrangement of flowers. Look more closely, however, and the garden begins to reveal its hidden life.
Among the layered blossoms and curling leaves, birds emerge—woven so naturally into the composition that discovering them becomes part of the experience of the work.
In this video, Safoura Haghighi introduces the painting and explains how its birds and flowers come together in a celebration of nature, beauty and harmony.

Floral Forms: An Evening of Color, Composition & Creative Connection 🌷🎨
Such a wonderful evening bringing art and design together at the IIDA Mid-Atlantic Sponsorship Networking Event at Steelcase.
We began with the same basic idea—a vase, stems, leaves and flowers—but the goal was never to create identical paintings. Each participant made her own decisions about color, proportion, movement and detail, and I loved seeing how differently every canvas developed.
That was really the point of the evening: art begins when we move from simply following steps to making intentional choices.
And judging by these paintings, there were some very good choices made. ❤️
This evening came together through a wonderful collaboration between Wolfgang & Luke and Broadway Galleries, with special thanks to Broadway Galleries for making the introduction.

What happens when the ego begins to speak louder than the soul?
In The Serpent of Desire, Safoura Haghighi explores the inner struggle between self-awareness and the part of us that seeks recognition, control and certainty.
Rendered through the symbolic language of Persian miniature painting, the work invites us to look inward: to recognize the ego without allowing it to become our master.

Why does Safoura Haghighi use genuine gold in her paintings?
Within the Persian tradition of tazhib, or illumination, gold is more than ornament. It catches and reflects light, bringing a sense of radiance and transcendence to the work.
Safoura prepares gold for use as pigment, then applies it by hand throughout her intricate compositions. Its luminosity shifts as the viewer moves—allowing the painting to reveal itself differently in changing light.

One painting—or three?
Artist Coty Dickson introduces Virginia Marsh, an atmospheric oil-on-canvas triptych capturing the quiet beauty of water, open sky and sunlit marsh grasses.
The three panels can be displayed together as a sweeping landscape or separated into three equally sized paintings—allowing the work to adapt beautifully to different spaces.

Some artistic journeys begin long before the artist picks up a brush.
Safoura Haghighi’s attraction to Persian miniature painting is rooted in generations of family creativity. Growing up surrounded by art gave her a personal connection to this rich and enduring heritage—one she now carries forward through her own contemporary visual language.
Her work does not merely revisit tradition. It allows tradition to continue evolving.
