Steinhatchee Fishing

Steinhatchee Fishing Your place to show off your Steinhatchee area photos and fish stories. Sunsets and sunrises too! Looking for the ultimate fishing thrill? You've found it!

In the Fall, fish such as spotted seatrout, redfish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, and jack crevalle, can easily be caught in shallow beach, inshore, brackish river, or backcountry waters. On the Steinhatchee Reef (29° 39.90'N 83° 37.59'W) follow the jumping schools of baitfish as well as the seagulls to locate Spanish mackerel, bluefish, trout, and other aggressive fish. As the water temp

erature grows cold around October and November, the large spotted (gator) seatrout will flood the Steinhatchee River. To be present and to participate in this phenomenon can be the fishing experience of a lifetime. The Winter months (January, February, and March) brings even more awesome grouper fishing. Due to spawning activities, Grouper can be caught in close to the shore (approximately 8 to 10 miles out) and can even be caught on the flats. The Steinhatchee Reef also becomes the home for Sheepshead. Spring also offers some fantastic fishing offshore. Grouper, black seabass, and red and Florida snapper can be caught on the bottom in about 35-foot to 55 feet of water. Spring also brings a run on king mackerel. Every spring and fall the kingfish travel through Steinhatchee on their quest to stay in the perfect water temperature, approximately 72°. Summer (July, August, and September) fishing includes a few more fish such as cobia, will often seek shelter from the hot sun by hiding in the shade of your boat. Tarpon often chase baitfish on the flats. You can also expect to catch flounder, shark, and of course, trout and redfish. Summer is SCALLOPING TIME in Steinhatchee. In fact, Steinhatchee is one of the top places in the United States for catching bay scallops. The season is open from July 1st to September 10th. Scallops are very easy to catch! Scallops seem to prefer areas of bottom covered by the thin, round bladed type of sea grass more than the flat, broad-bladed turtle grass. Patches of brown algae are also favorite hiding places. Scalloping is easy, fun, and can be enjoyed by all ages.

Coffee with the Captain’s Wife: (your are in for a treat today)

Well, anyone who knows me knows there may be more Diet Dew than coffee involved… and today’s ###L-Dew rant is brought to you by the phrase “cost-effective charter.” Lord help me. (And help you if you say “cost-effective” one more time today… at least until the Dew wears off anyway.)

We’ve been in this business 27 years. That’s 27 years of struggles: permits, fisheries closures, good mechanics, bad mechanics, surprise repairs, weather events, expensive repairs, and enough motors to make Suzuki send us a Christmas card. (🦗🦗🦗) Yeah… that ain’t happening. We told them we really “wanted” new motors too. 🤣(🦗🦗🦗)

Sure, there was a time we’d take a cheap charter to pay a bill, scout around, or show off the unique fisheries of Steinhatchee. Sometimes we still do. But 27 years later, what you’re really paying for is experience, knowledge, safety, and somebody knowing where the fish were yesterday… and where they moved this morning.

That knowledge didn’t come free, and neither did motor set number five!

Now, to the folks who undercut prices — no shade from me. Some are building a business, some are retired, and some just love being on the water more than sitting at home listening to their spouse rant while vibrating on Mt. Dew. I get it. Everybody runs their business their own way.

Every captain has different expenses, different goals, and different reasons for charging what they charge.

So do your homework. POLITELY ask for referrals. Call, text, DM, stalk social media a little — we all do it. But don’t assume charter captains don’t know how to run their businesses “cost-effectively.”

Trust me… if there was a cheaper way to keep boats running, every captain in Florida would already know about it. And we’d all be driving Mercedes, if that’s how success was measured.
We just measure ours by smiles, photos, friendships built over a quarter century of doing this – our way… and apparently the occasional Christmas card. LOL

So put that in your cost-effective pipe and smoke it. 😂

Signed,
Your dedicated, cost-effective, Sassafras-on-Dew wife of a beloved local captain…

Momma Bear defending all of our hardworking, underappreciated captains of Steinhatchee. 😎

Peace Out... I have to go run this Dew off....

Festival kickoff in the news!

For the small town of Steinhatchee, this weekend is a really big deal. Not only is it about the festival, but it’s also about helping a community continue to recover after being hit by three storms in just 13 months.
