“No. 8 Gravitationally Bound” by Jim Anderson, 2023.

The photos span a 2-year period planning, designing, and creating this 40” tall beast!

22 species of wood, UV reactive epoxy, brass rivets, hand-cut Mother of Pearl, homemade decorative inlay, 283 stained glass pieces, and a secret trap door to boot! Inspired by our Solar System and its relationship with the Sun.

You can find these piece at the Federal Way Arts Explosion 2026 between May 29-31, 2026! Come find me if you attend the opening night gala!

-Silver Medal, 2023 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (Mixed Media).

“No. 6 Jupiter aka Lathe Breaker” by Jim Anderson, 2022.

Yes… this piece found and broke a manufacturer’s defect in my lathe and nearly ended this armillary series.

15 species of wood, epoxy, brass, and Mother of Pearl. Inspired by observing the planetary conjunction between Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars.

3rd of 4 from my “The Great Conjunction” series in 2022, and built for my artist debut at the Bainbridge Arts and Crafts Gallery’s “Art and Service Exhibition” in November 22.

Jim Anderson creates intricate wooden sculptures that feel part instrument, part orbit, with layered forms that shift, align, and invite you to look a little closer.

Based in Steilacoom, his work draws from navigation, astronomy, and engineered design, using precision craftsmanship and rotating elements to explore motion and balance.

After 24 years of military service, Jim found his way to woodworking as a new path forward. What began as a means of rebuilding became a practice rooted in focus, curiosity, and discovery. Each piece carries that journey; they’re structured, dynamic, and always in motion.

This week, he’s filled the space with a full collection of his incredible works, now on display at The Carpenter’s House. Step in and watch how each piece shifts as you move through it.
