Congratulations to Polaris company member Amy Ippolito for defending her MFA thesis today! “Turning Pointe: A Physical Approach to Building a Character Through Breath and Ballet” explores Amy’s time as an Acting Concentration learning how to navigate and meld her ballet training with her acting training as a way to build different and unique characters. Looking specifically at movement based practices to dive into the text and character allows the dancer turned actor to feel more confident in their work. Today we not only celebrate her thesis, but all her work this past season! ✨🗡

🎓 All 11 Polaris company members have officially passed their thesis defenses, which means we’ll see YOU (and each other) at graduation on May 14! 🎓

Congratulations to Polaris company member Callie Banholzer for defending her MFA thesis today! “‘Give Us Some Music’: Exploring Music Direction and Development for the Stage” examines Callie’s process as actor/music director in both AS YOU LIKE IT and CYMBELINE. Through her work Callie seeks to create an approach to music direction that prioritizes making theatre that is active, alive, and evolving for the entirety of a production—highlighting how her hyphenated roles have influenced her style of direction. Today we not only celebrate her thesis, but all her work throughout our past season! ✨🍄

Congratulations to Polaris company member Robert Gotschall for defending his MFA thesis today! "Counterfeiting the Tragedian: Developing Character with Tragicomic Sensibilities" is a meditation on how Robby’s background as a clown and comic actor informed his performance of Caius Martius in CORIOLANUS and Lussurioso in THE REVENGER'S TRAGEDY. He asserts that the experienced comic actor already has the means necessary to develop tragic roles by virtue of his ability to make meaningful connections with the audience and how he occupies space and time on stage. Today we not only celebrate Robby’s thesis, but all his work throughout this past season! ✨🔥

Congratulations to Polaris company member Haley Davis for defending her MFA thesis today! "What The F**k Is My Job? Defining the Role of the Director" seeks to define the role of the director as it pertains to both the rehearsal process and collaboration with designers. By establishing clear boundaries and expectations in her own directing method, Haley’s hopes that experienced and aspiring directors might not only reimagine their own validity in the production process, but also reestablish the parameters of where their job ends and someone else’s begins. Today we not only celebrate Haley’s thesis, but all her work throughout this past season! ✨🍄

Congratulations to Polaris company member Trent Stephens for defending his MFA thesis today! “Productive Limitations and Resourceful Theatre Practices” centers on Trent’s process as the director of CORIOLANUS with a specific focus on how limitations and resourceful theatre practices shaped the production. Resourceful theatre practices not only make producing theatre more affordable, but generate unique opportunities for inventive theatre and can even forge relationships between a theatre company and the community. Today we not only celebrate Trent’s thesis, but all his work throughout this past season! ✨🔥

Congratulations to Polaris company member Amber James for defending her MFA thesis today! “Growth Mindset: A Director’s Guide to F**king Up to Make Better Art” explores her experience directing CYMBELINE to demonstrate the ubiquitous benefits of destigmatizing failure in the rehearsal room. By modeling a commitment to embracing failure as a productive force in rehearsal, directors can discover useful ways to encourage a mindset of growth in both their actors and themselves that expands innovation and cooperative potential. Today we not only celebrate her thesis, but all her work throughout this season! ✨💍

Congratulations to Thomas Prater for defending his MFA thesis today! “Communing with the Spirits: Making Space for a Character" analyzes Thomas’s experience playing Menenius in CORIOLANUS and Vindice in THE REVENGER’S TRAGEDY to argue for the benefits of regarding the character as an entity that possesses the actor’s clear and alive body over the limitations of crafting character choices. The actor must train their being as a vessel for the character to fill up, rather than fill their own body with predetermined notions about the character that may or may not come from the text of the play. Today we celebrate not only his thesis but all his work throughout our past season! ✨💀

Congratulations to Polaris company member Michael Blackwood for defending his MFA thesis today! Drawing on the field of semiotics, “Action is Eloquence: Physical Character Creation in the Small-Scale Genre” begins with the argument that in the small-scale genre, the actor's body must be used as a signifier just as much as any prop or costume. Then, Michael details his own rehearsal process as he sought to create distinct characters for our small-scale production of CORIOLANUS.
